I have a 1978 MF245 diesel orchard tractor purchased from my late uncle a few years ago. It has 2000+ hours and everything is pretty much original. The battery tests static at 13.4 volts and when running about 14.3 volts. The starter clicks and after about 4 or 5 turns of the key she'll fire up. Pardon my ignorance but is this a solenoid or could the starter be going. Can it be tested to see which one is the culprit? I'm avoiding the MF dealer until I have a better idea of whats going on. I always get good info from this site so thanks in advance

If its a Delco try this. Remove the ground cable, then remove all wires and battery cable from the TOP solenoid bolt. Loosen the nut about 1/2 inch, push the bolt IN and then 1/2 turn. Now pull it out and tighten the nut, replace all wires and cables. This USUALLY makes a Delco solenoid like new again by placing the unworn bolt head where the contact washer can work again.

Good chance it's what dieseltech said. In addition you should clean up all the connections from the battery to the solenoid including the ground cable at the frame. You can also check for voltage at the start terminal on the solenoid from the key switch (key switch in start position). It's probably something simple which won't cost any money at all.

I have a 245D with over 5000 hours that I did the Dieseltech mod to about 8 years ago, still going strong. Your mileage may vary;-)
