Nice article about him today.
He went from private to colonel in 5 years.
Combat pilot in B-24s over Germany.
Never would talk to the press during or after his time in service.
He made some good movies too.

spring of 1979 jimmy and his ranch manager was at triple H bull test station north of Burlngton Iowa buying Hereford bulls. If i recall correctly Jimmy did all the bidding himself. He was introduced before the sale started.

Right up there with Charles Sorensen, William Knudsen, Charles Lindbergh and George McGovern.

A part of our education in the 50's was to watch Spirit of St. Louis. Never forgot it. I
recently rewatched No Highway in the Sky.

That was a great story about Jimmy Stewart. I didn't realize he had a long military service. I watched this movie. The Spirit of St. Lewis. It came out in 1957. I was probably 16. Stan

My favorite movie of all is Flight of the Phoenix with Jimmy Stewart. there is a remake which is good but the old one was better. if you like mechanical stuff you'll like this.

CD .... I've read several of Neville Shute's books, I must check the library for one next time I'm in. One that he wrote that YT'ers would like to read is Trustee From The Toolroom. Shute was an engineer and many of his books had a mechanical theme. Here's an excerpt from your link ....

'His last book, Trustee from the Toolroom, told of a middle-aged engineer who, as the result of an obligation, had to do an immensley complicated bit of smuggling. The book was a runaway best-seller in 1961, yet it could have doubled as an engineering text. If you've never read any Shute, try him. You'll be surprised.'

I didn't realize that his full name was Neville Shute Norway and dropped the last name for his books.

Onee of the first movies I remember going to with my Dad. Winchester 73 in about 1950? Dad went out and found one in 44-40 cal and both of us alternated killing a deer with it until Dadquit in 1972
