2015 Silverado transmission has a shutter

I have found that there are about as many excuses for the vibrations my pickup has as there are Chevy pickups on the road. Don't most of us want to blame the torque converter? Isn't that probably the number one reason? When the transmission shutters it sounds like you are driving on the edge of the road with those cut in rumble strips. I believe this is the 6 speed. So, should I put in a new torque convertor, maybe a heavy duty one or should I buy a complete rebuilt transmission? Sounds like the torque converters cost around $200 and then add another $800 to $1000 for installation. A rebuilt transmission with a torque converter can run between $2700 and $4000 or more plus a minimum of another $1000 - $1500 to install. A large Chevrolet dealer told me $6500 for a complete transmission job with a rebuilt transmission. The advantage of a complete transmission is that the labor isn't much more than for just the torque converter. With 150,000 miles on the pickup would I be ahead to go with the rebuilt transmission or will my original transmission go a lot more miles? I did pull the pan last week and change out some of the tranmission oil. The magnet had a pretty good chunk of metal paste on it. No fines or metal chunks. Oil was dirty. Changing probably under 1/2 of the transmission oil didn't help the shutter any. I plan to drain and fill again. What about the No More Shutter product in the little tube. Can that help? Guy at the NAPA store says he has seen results. Some how it changes how the clutch in the torque converter can grip. I guess for $10 a tube what can you lose. Ideas appreciated.
 

Sadly, it's time to install a quality reman transmission with a good warranty and HOPE it makes it another 150K.
 
I wonder why the extra cost to replace a tranny compared to a convertor...is there a magic way to access the convertor without moving the tranny backwards far enough, which is what 90% of being able to remove it from the truck?? Maybe a question to ask? to me it's the same amount of work, but still a replacement tranny is your best bet by the sounds of things BTDT.
 
Torque converter is failing. TCC clutch starts to delaminate, then hot spots develop and lead to steel on steel. Converter grindings then dump directly into the pump, scoring it, then the fluid pressure starts to drop, compounding the issue. Then, the 4,5,6 clutch starts to slip due to low pressure, burning those clutch plates.

The root issue is not the transmission, but the fuel economy tune in the transmission that engages TCC early (low speeds), over working it. GM didn't change anything in the transmission to cope with this increased demand from the TCC components. The 6L80/90E has changed very little over its design life, but the converter failure is a '14 up issue. I usually see them fail between 80-120K, unacceptable.

Make sure however you decide to have it fixed, that the converter installed has a billet steel front cover. If a shop is rebuilding yours, it will need a converter, a front pump, and I would recommend making sure the 4,5,6,R drum is replaced. The 456R drum is a high failure piece on all 6L80/90E. Also make sure the cooler bypass thermostat upgrade is done lower operating temp, that is another '14 up problem. A custom tune to delay TCC engagement wouldn't hurt, either, but will reduce fuel economy.
 
I had a 1970 Chevy and figured it this way. I figured out the cost of truck and miles I got.Then come up with the cost per mile. Then I figured out cost of repair and miles I'd have to drive after the repair to come up with the same cost per mile as before the repair. If is sounded like I could Do that I repaired it. I put 275,000 miles on truck and had it 33 years. Example 30,000$ truck drove it 150,000 mile cost per mile .20 cents per mile repair 6500$ at .20 per mile need to drive it 32500 mile more.
 
My 2019 Colorado seemed to develope an engine missing problem at about 20K miles. Turned out to be a transmission problem. This has the 8 speed automatic transmission. Dealer found a buelletin on that problem. First try was flush the transmission 3 times with upgraded fluid. That solved the problem. Next two steps would have been a new torque converter then a new 10 speed transmission. I know this doesn't exactly follow your situation but if your going to try new transmission fluid you should ask if the new fluid is compatible with you transmission.

A mechanic I use and got the quote from did mention it might cost less for labor doing a converter if the transmission had clearance to be moved backwards far enough rather than being totally removed. He was firm in saying that might not be able to happen in which case basically the labor is the same for converter replacement and transmission replacement.
 
I once had a Chevy van that developed a shutter . Turned out the flywheel had a cracked spoke. Only shuttered at certain highway speeds.
 
We had that same symptom in a Ford thunderbird turbo coupe. It was the torque converter, my wife and I changed it for under $150. In about 1990. Probably the quicker you change it the less contaminated the transmission will be.
 
Do not just replace the converter. By the time you feel it, the transmission is already damaged. Replacing the converter will just fill a new converter with metal.
 
Wife had something similar on her 01 blazer turned out it was a replaceable wear point on the shift forks for the transfer case had failed. Would start suddenly and go away after vehicle had slowed to under 35 mph.
 
Could it be your driveshaft?have a 95 I replaced bent/out of balance driveshaft with one from a junkyard .never vibrated again and I too thought it was the transmission at first,just saying
 
It sounds like the convertor. If it was lower mileage I would change the converter, flush, change filter and fluid. With the higher mileage I would go with a good remained from Jasper or GM. Cost a little more but the warranty is there. Later models with the 8 speed had problems with the fluid at first and it was a flush and exchange and if that didn't fix the shudder replace the TC. Hope you get it fixed
