Power steering does not work. How can I tell if I need a new pump? Should I drain all fluid and refill and try again? Don't want to spend $300 on a pump, but will if I have to. The steering cylinders seem to work fine-no leaks. I see pumps without the cannister for $150, but don't want to order that one if it won't work. Have decided that it has the Barnes pump on it as the bolt is not centered on the cannister cover. Have jacked up the front end and turned the wheel from left to right and back and it works easily that way. Don't hear any crunching noises in the steering box. Any help will be appreciated.

To test the pump pressure you need to tee in a pressure gauge and a valve in the pressure line to load the pump.

Quite a contraption for a one time use...

Or you can do the redneck at your own discretion method, use a red rag and vise grips to squeeze the pressure hose down and listen for the pump to load and the engine to labor. There is a chance of damaging the hose though, wear safety glasses! And be sure you are on the pressure hose and not the return line.

If no pressure builds, take the pump apart and have a look inside, pretty simple if it's the one I'm thinking.

IF the reservoir is removed is there not a filter inside that could be plugged just a guess since most semi's have a filter in the oil canister on them. I change mine about once a year or when I change the hoses on it. Whichever comes first.

Yes, there is a filter in the canister. It's supposed to be delivered today.
Since it hasn't had a filter in it, since who knows when, I was wondering if
draining the fluid as best I could out of cylinders, pump, canister and hoses
if that might solve the problem.
I will try the red neck way of seeing if the pump has any pressure.
Thanks.

Just an FYI, my 202 PS pump has whined (But worked) since the day I bought it 15 years ago. Never have been able to find a repair/reman kit for it. Thinks it's the helical gears that get bad. you're right on the cost, they're pricey pumps. I'd be interested in the $300 one you mentioned, apparently doesn't come with the cannister? I've just seen the $500 ones with the cannister. There is a filter inside the cannister, replaced mine and all fluid, didn't change the whine but it continues to work. You might check spindle bearings in the front end, the FEL is hard on them. Might be working against a lot of resistance if they've disintegrated.

The 6th one down in the Massey Ferguson 202 parts has the pump with canister for $310.
On this very page, go to the top and click on tractor parts, then massey ferguson, and
them 202 and the 6th one is the pump I guess you would need.

Wanted to make sure you got this info. I have ordered parts from Yesterdaystractors.com and have been satisfied.
Just go to tractor parts, Massey Ferguson, 202, steering and the 6th item down is the pump you probably need.
