Is there such a thing as a drop center 16.5 rim?

I remember as a kid that the dump trailer (built on an old Ford 3/4 ton truck frame) had 16.5 tires on it.

Right now it has 245/75R16 tires. Mounted and dismounted that rotten old 1988-year tire twice yesterday. Still have all my fingers and teeth...

Pretty sure it has the same rims it always had. They're drop center rims.

There's one 16.5 tire around here yet, and it's on a locking ring rim. Thought all 16.5's were locking ring.

Is there such a thing as a 16.5 drop center?
 
I have seen dually rims that are 16.5 and also gm and ford 2wd 16.5 rims that don't have locking rings.
 

16.5 is a tubeless design, no lock ring were ever used for 16.5 tires
I ve seen 16.5 dually rims but 16 inch non lock ring wheels were more popular
Today 16.5 tires are difficult to find
 
Thats the problem with 16.5,they will fit a 16 rim but kill
you when they come off
 
As I recall all 16.5s were tubeless on drop center wheels. Used to see them a lot on campers and small motor homes. Haven't seen one in years.
 
All 16.5 tires are designed for tubeless rims. All are drop center design or the tire bead could not be stretched on the rim.
Any 16.5 tire on a locking ring rim is wrong and would have a tube and certainly be loose and dangerous. Jim
 
All 16.5 wheels are drop center.If you see one mounted with a lock ring,stay out of the way,it is a ticking time bomb.It has been done,but extremely dangerous.16.5 tires have a tapered bead,and is held om the tapered rim by air pressure.I still have them on my Dodge dump truck,but will change when they wear out.Still have them on my manlift,Bobcat,and one tag trailer.
 
I owned a 1977 F250 Bicentennial, TRAILER SPECIAL 3/4 ton.

It had 16.5 drop center Rims.......NO Locking Ring...

It had a 460 Engine with 429 Super Cobra heads...

71 CC combustion chambers...

Advanced the ignition, installed an IMPCO propane system.... Purchased a Camshaft Gear with advanced timing marks....
.040 oversize pistons......
Changed the intake Manifold ...

One fantastic pulling machine...

Anyone ever watched the HIGHWAY THROUGH HELL on the knowledge Network...
Pulled those hills many times with a Camper on my 1977...:)....:)

The 16.5 showed up in 1967 +/- and Ford GM and Dodge used them. I got 6 or 7 of them some with tires that need a home, not used in NY, came from Calif. Make offer I had them on a 3/4 ton ford. Tires were designed to work on that design rim only.

The majority of skid loaders use 16.5" drop center rims and since they also fit 6 and8 bolt wagon hubs we often use worn skid tires on wagons or implements. Those tires can be used on 16'' wagon rims with care and a tube with care because they have a more tapered bead.
 
I was going to say all the 16.5's I saw were a one piece wheel/rim with no rings. The 16's were the 2 piece rims/wheels with a ring on one side for removal to change tires. Then later about the early or mid 80's they came out with a one piece wheel /rim for 169 inch tires and that's wehn the 16.5 got put to pasture pretty much and since they have come out with one piece setups for the 16,17,18,19 tires. They also back when used to have a 17.5 and 19.5 tires and an 18inch two piece wheel /rim on some of the old GMC/Chevy trucks.
