Flywheel Timing Marks JD 40 U

MZ Ranch

New User
Hey guys been a while since I posted on the forum. I have a 1953 JD40 U and I am trying to time it with my timing light. There are two TIMING indication lines on the flywheel, one says SPARK and has been painted faintly with a yellow paint, the other says DC. The letters D and C, D is above the line and C is below the timing mark line. I timed it with the SPARK timing line. It is running really good but doesn t seem to have the power in second gear to pull the springtooth that it had before the neighbor borrowed it, I know I should ve known better than let the neighbor borrow it.

I would be looking at something else--timing is fixed unless someone moves it. If ignition is suspect, check points, possible capacitor fail, way down list is coil fail. Lack of power more likely is fuel feed or quality. Or lack of air, plugged air intake. Air, fuel, compression, then ignition gets power.

(quoted from post at 16:43:13 09/25/22) SPARK is what you want at full throttle.

I have SPARK close to center in the timing hole at full throttle going to try to get it centered better then maybe advance the distributor to get a tiny bit more power under load. Any thoughts on if might work.

I reset the points because they were only at about .014 I set them at .020 and that seemed to give the tractor more power at low end.

Changing the point gap changes the
timing. Always set the points first.

If it's still weak open up your
carburetor load screw a little.
