Strange problem with Cub Cadet

I have a problem this Sunday afternoon: my very dependable Cub Cadet riding mower runs great only with PTO engaged at WOT.

Disengage the PTO and it starts sputtering, backfiring and surging.

I ve been able to mow today no problem. If this helps, the issue first started when I ran it out of gas. Upon refueling it had the above issues. Engine is a Kohler twin, I think the tractor was made in 1998, have to check the paperwork that came with. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions. Gerrit

That could be a air cleaner needing to be replaced or a carb linkage problem or weak linkage spring or the carb it self needs some TLC

RedMF40 , Does it have a lot of black smoke out of the exhaust when it is running poorly. If so it could have trash stuck under the carb needle valve ,that got in there when it ran out of gas.

Thanks for the replies. I just started the tractor and moved it around before putting it away. Runs fine, even at low speed and PTO disengaged. Scratching my head.

I did check the air filter and the only other thing I did was to add some Sea Foam when I filled up today. Maybe that cleared things up?

I ll monitor the situation. Again, thanks for the advice.

No black smoke. Just running so rough I felt like I was damaging the engine. Just ran it now and everything cleared up. Crazy. Thanks, Gerrit
