polarizing a generator

I have done this before, but would like a refresher. The tractor is a Massey Ferguson 35 gas, 12 volt negative ground with a generator. The armature terminal of the voltage regulator is NOT accessible, if that matters. How should I polarize the generator? Thank you.

If the ARM terminal on the VR isn't accessible, polarize by jumping from the VR's BAT terminal, or another source of hot ungrounded battery voltage, direct to the ARM post on the generator and BEFORE starting.
