Morning All,

I'm in the process of buying a '91 Case IH 695 tractor. I bought a service manual that was sold as a 585, 685, 595, 695 series tractor. Pub is 8-57670. It has various dated material in the different chapters, but not much specifically for the 695.

So far, glancing through the first 300 pages or so, the only place I'm seeing the 695 referenced, is the title page. Maintenance charts, spec charts, etc... none of that shows the 695.

The steering section (which is what I really need) is from 1986 (pub 8-56470) and I'm pretty sure it doesn't look like my tractor.

So I'm thinking I have the wrong / older manual. I don't have access to the tractor right now, so I can't be 100% sure. If I'm wrong, I'm only out $30. It sucks, but I need the right manual.

Anyone have a similar tractor with the corresponding service manual I can get reference #s / pub #s / dates published?

Thank you much.

Those tractors didn't change much except for the tin work from the 70's to the 90's. It will work for your tractor just fine. The engines were the big difference in them. From the clutch back they were pretty much the same. 74 84 95 series.

According to the seller, I have to split the tractor to change the steering pump. I had less than a day with the tractor before I had to head out so I'm not familiar with the tractor yet. And there's not a whole lot of info out there on this particular tractor.

I'm not even sure his diagnosis is correct. I guess I'm trying to put my cart before the horse and learn as much as I can.

So, with this manual, you think I'll be able to deal with the situation if I do have to split the tractor to get to the steering pump? I'm pretty handy at mechanical stuff, but I like instructions so I get it just right. lol

THank you again.

If you're expecting step-by-step instructions with pictures like a set of Legos, then the manual will not help you much. It's written from the perspective of a trained mechanic.

In my experience these manuals are written with a "main path" and the dated material is where things diverge. So if your tractor is not covered by dated material the "main path" instructions apply.

Do you have oil leaking around the steering column? Leaking steering orbitrol?. No need to split, but a little work to get the orbitrol out.

No, you do NOT have to split the tractor to remove the steering pump ( orbitrol), but you sure need experience with dissasembly and resealing
the pump. CHI price was 170 or more for the seal kit. This was on a 685. The teflon seal is tricky to install.

I'm not sure what is going on with the tractor yet as I've had only half a day left at home when I bought the tractor last week. I'm really trying to get an idea of what I'm looking at. On my old Massey Ferguson, the steering pump is right there, in the open, not much to it. The guy I bought it from said steering pump bad, split the tractor. He is not mechanically inclined, so he's going off what someone else told him. I'll have a better idea of what's actually going on once I get my hands dirty (literally). lol

I'm just concerned that the images, steps, and directions in the manual don't specify they are the 695, except for the title. The steering section is from 86 while the 695 was produced from 91 to 95. A lot can change in five years so I was curious to what the community thought about it.

Once I get home in 9 days, I'll get my hands on it again and really be able to see what's going on. I just hope the service manual will be of some use because, right now, I'm not confident it will be.

Thank you again. :)

It sounds like you need to do some diagnostics. Do the pto, 3pt, remotes, or brakes function properly? Or is
only the steering? The only reason you would have to do a split is if the pressure plate splines that drive
the pump and pto were stripped. Replacing the hydraulic pump does not require a split. Mark.

I will definitely be doing diagnostics once I get my hands on the tractor again. 9 days from now.

It's nice to hear the odds of splitting the tractor going down though. Hopefully, it's an easier than expected fix. Something a lot simpler than replacing the pump.

Could be a stuck priority valve in the MCV valve behind the hydraulic filter, usual symptom is either 3pt and remote hydraulic outlet(s) work and the PS and PTO don't work or the opposite.
Test, while trying to turn steering wheel dead head the remote hydraulic valve, if the PS works then it is the priority valve.

my dad had a 684 and the steering stuck on it. the piston in the steering cylinder is only a press fit and it sometimes moves on the shaft. after it
did this a couple times the mechanic at the shop put a small bead from a welder on each side of the piston and that prettymuch cured it. we later had
an 895 and all those tractors are pretty much the same so one manual should cover them all

for the hand pump/steering motor, is timed so need to mark things and keep them in order or it can do strange things if out of time. At least on our 574 this was the case when we had the motor apart for deeper leaks than the seal at the top end behind the steering wheel. I think it was for the band on the bottom end of the motor/hand pump. This was for removing the end cap for the replacement.

Evening Everyone,

So I'm back on this project for a little bit. Life & work have a way of getting in the way. I've been working on this tractor a little bit at a time. Here's where I am.

I rebuilt the steering ram. There was nothing in there that said "hey, I'm a problem." Parts were cheap, so no big waste there. I did have a busted steering pipe, so replaced that with a hose.

The orbitol is not leaking, but that's all I've done with that so far.

I pulled the MCV & pump out. I'm fairly confident the pump is good. It's not the original and was replaced 10-15 years ago. The 3pt raises and lowers as it should, but I don't have my 3pt implements at the house so can't test with weight.

I checked the diverter. I pulled both plugs from the MCV bottom, but the one to the left only had the plug / oring / spring is all that came out. I believe the spool should come out. Is that correct?

I've tried to find a YouTube video of any MCV like mine, and not seeing one. If anyone knows of one, please let me know.

Thanks,
Tim

To close out this topic with the final results... an oring in the MCV was damaged (my bet is improper installation) which fed debris to the steering orbitrol. Debris caused that to malfunction. Disassembled and cleaned and rebuilt both MCV and orbitrol. Steering works as it should now.
