JD 6000 hiboy injection pump

We had it to break the throttle cable on it this past Saturday. Earlier in the same day it had a spell where it abruptly started surging then quit and return to normal. We didn't think much of it as it probably was the original cable, so we got a new cable from JD dealer and reinstalled with the same tie down measurements on ea end. Fast forward to yesterday, and the surging spell reappeared briefly with me, then later in the day it snapped the throttle arm off of the side of the injection pump. I had my mechanic pull the pump and sent off to the local pump shop. Curiosity is killing the cat and I wondered what to be prepared for. What would cause it to do this chain of events inside of the injection pump ?

That machine has a Roosamaster injection pump. I am suspecting you had two different issues. One being that chemical got in the fuel control pivot point and made it stiff to operate and eventually broke both the cable and lever. Secondly, the plastic cushion ring for the governor weight assembly got old and started breaking apart. The little pieces float around in the pump and occasionally get in places the should not be and cause it to run erratically. This usually is paired with the pieces lodging in the check valve in the return line of the pump. This raises the housing pressure and the engine dies or starts lacking power. However if at some point that check valve was knocked out of the fitting to allow the machine to continue to run parts in the injection pump start wearing metal to metal. There may even be a point were rotating pieces start coming off inside the pump. That could very well break things. We will see if Dieseltech chimes in with any more details. I would ask the injection pump shop if the return line check valve was intact on the pump.
