Steering wheel

JD tractor, shiny coating is mostly gone off of my steering wheel and I get black all over my hands. Is there anything I can do or do I need to replace? Thanks

On my older tractors I wipe the wheel down good and spray it with black rattle can paint. You may have to mask the spokes off, and/or throw a rag over anything you don't want overspray to get on.

Replace it. This site sells steering wheels for a reasonable price. The hardest part is taking it off. Use a little anti seize going back in case you want to remove it some day.

I used to put these on my cars in the 70's to make them go faster ;)

Got one on one of my 5000's now because of what you described

It will polish up with use. I have also had good luck coating steering wheels with plasti-dip. Usually after filling any cracks with JB weld.

Once the shine disappears the exposed plastic oxidizes, which is what comes off and gets your hands black.

I have scrubbed the heck out of my black steering wheel with a couple of grades of steel wool. Fine wool last, then applied old fashioned hard floor wax to it. Let dry good and then rub it down some to shine a bit.

(quoted from post at 14:09:02 09/18/22) Hey Fred, I put a 10" steering wheel on my 1970 Nova SS to make it go faster.........seemed to work, I never got beat.

Has to be the weight reduction of the smaller steering wheel that made it faster....really :)

New aftermarket steering wheels degrade quickly.

Wash your hands when you're done or wear gloves.

I remember my hands getting black after running a tractor for a few hours back when I was younger, but it doesn't happen now. Apparently the stuff that comes off on your hands eventually wears off entirely.

New steering wheels will be making your hands black in no time because they're nowhere near as good quality as the originals. I only consider replacing wheels if they're in really rough shape.

Yes. It's getting hard to get more than 30 years out of them these days.
