JD-400-D Loader/Backhoe fan belt

I want to replace the fan/alternator belt on my 1970 JD-400 backhoe/loader but I just don't see how to get it off. It seems that the pump is close coupled to the engine crank balancer.

Is there a trick to removal without removing the pump? Neither the owner's manual or the shop manual make any mention of the procedure so I must be missing something.

(quoted from post at 11:44:29 09/11/22) Pump has to come off, or whatever is
easiest.

Unless you want to use a linked belt.

CORRECTION: hyd pump drive coupler needs to be removed to R&R fan belt on a JD 400 TLB. Drive coupler can be removed by removing nuts(item 8) & bolts(item 7). Now would be a good time to replace bushings(item 4) part # AR49427 consists of 4 bushings. Fan belt part # is R97758

Jim has you covered, but just wondering if you are
using an IT ..brand.. manual or a John Deere published
manual. The IT manuals do not go into a lot of detail on
minor repairs like changing a fan belt. They are
designed more for an experienced mechanic who
needs only information on complex parts of the
machine along with specs and clearances. Now a JD
book should cover the belt R&R process thoroughly.
Are you sure you did not skip over a reference to
another section? It could be that the technical writer
just missed some details. In the future you may think
about referring to another section that may require the
same process to see what is said there. Such as
pulling the front crankshaft pulley, I would suspect in
that section removal of the hydraulic pump coupler is
covered. Just some thoughts that hopefully will help
you in the future.

On mine the coupler gets removed. I think its a 9/16 socket on a long extension. You may have to rotate the engine to make it easier. The bolts are reversed so one comes off from the top. The other you can access from the bottom. Its a good time to inspect the coupler for wear since your there.

Like said just remove the pump coupler. ?have to do that on most Deere tractors to get the belt off and on. and god time to change the rubber bushings while apart too.

On at least some of the couplers the nuts (# eight) are used as jam nuts. The capscrews (# 7) are threaded into the coupling half clamps (# 6). Remove the nuts before trying to turn the capscrews. You may want to loosen the capscrews on the pump end of the drive shaft (# 2) and slip it towards the pump to gain a bit more room. Be careful not to lose the key out of the pump shaft, if you do loosen that end.

Thanks Tim. That is encouraging news. My tool box isn't packed full of peanut and jelly sandwiches as some have claimed (I do have some tools in it too :D ) but I didn't buy this girl to become a full time tractor mechanic. Is the bushing set only available from JD or is the coupling not a proprietary item and commercially available? I assume the belt is just a regular old v-belt.

(quoted from post at 07:24:34 09/12/22) If you are going to have the tractor for a while and take it apart for the belt, zip tie a second belt in there for the next
time.

Good advise. Thanks.

They are all Peaceful Creek reprints.

The coupler doesn't look like anything standard, and I would not expect Deere to use anything standard.

You may as well get the belt at Deere while you're there.

Not sure if buying an old worn out machine is the right way to not become a full time tractor mechanic, LOL.

Due to relative ease of disassembling hyd pump drive coupler I would advise anyone not to zip tie an extra fan belt on tractor. Hyd drive coupler bushings would more than likely need replaced before another fan belt would need replacing unless fan belt pullies are extremely worn.

Can I get the belt and coupling bushings through this forum?

I found the coupling bushings here but not the belt. No listing.

Your local auto parts store should be able to cross the JD number, or match the old belt. If there is a heavy-duty option, like a truck belt vs plain automotive, get the heavier one. I prefer the cog type over the solid ones, I think they wrap to the pulleys better.
