Magic potions? Kinda long.

Okay people get out the magic potions and all the magic formula/tricks to maybe help me with this one. I inherited an Earthmaster tractor from a good friend that passed away. Before you start snickering and condemning it, I know this is an insignificant tractor compared to what most of you guys have and use. That is beside the point here, to each his own and this one is important to me for several reasons, but mostly because of who it came from. The tractor was running good before my friend came down with ALS, (AKA Lou Gherig's disease)and eventually died which meant the tractor has not ran since about 2008. Engine had been rebuilt before he got sick and was in good running condition at that time. Since then it had sat with the exhaust covered until I was notified to come and get it last month. The engine was not stuck but I did pour about 1/2 cup of diesel fuel with ATF and a little acetone mix into each spark plug hole and let it sit for a few days before turning it over with the starter and blowing most of the mix out of the cylinders. I polished the points, cleaned the carburetor and got it cranked and after burning the diesel/ATF mix out it ran good for the next couple of hours, oil pressure is good also. but it will give off a little blue haze when running. I checked the compression after running it for 2 hours and the front cylinder has 95# compression and the rear has that also. Cyl # 2 has 90# and cyl # 3 has 87#. I am wondering if possibly the oil rings are stuck in a couple of the cylinders maybe? I added some Sea Foam to the gallon tank of gas I ran through it this afternoon and with it running about 2,000 RPM's I misted a pint of water through the carburetor to help clean out the carbon deposits maybe. After this it ran much better but still does smoke a little blue haze, just less than it did before. I drained the old oil out today after it got hot and all circulated. Any thoughts or ideas on this one?

Sure. just operate it as often as you can. Put it in action doing something that can load the engine beyond running fast. those compression readings are OK and will likely improve as it gets loosened up. Use 15-40 diesel oil in the engine because it will protect better and start better than car oils made today that are tailored for catalytic converter protection. don't feel compelled to use special fuel the owner probably gust used E10 regular and that is fine. Enjoy Jim

From what you say ,Id run it as hard as you want with all the maintenance completed. Change all the fluids ,grease and flush coolant , have fun .

Give it some run time. As in, using it run time. Smoke will likely clear up. I wouldn't bother about gas additives. Just add straight (fresh) gas to the tank.

I agree with everyone who says run it. But I add that engine temperature is important. Is this water cooled? Have a temp gauge? A good thermostat and gauge go a long way towards a good temperature short of being able to work the engine.

Only thing I can add is be sure the oil level is correct. If you can find the factory spec on how much, fill it with that amount and compare that to the dipstick, just in case it has the wrong dipstick.

Also be sure the crankcase vent is clean and free, the thermostat is in and working, and the carb high speed is set properly. Too rich will cause smoke and overtime contaminate and raise the oil level. If it has a fuel pump be sure it is not leaking into the crankcase.

when you get done with what you want to do for maintenance then go work it's tail off for several days and it will probably clean up.

I agree with what most people say about fresh fluids and run it hard for a while. Except I would fill the engine crankcase with 5W20 or 5W30 synthetic oil and run it. Most likely the rings are stuck or sticking. A good thin detergentated oil with a good additive package will do more to clean the gunk up than a thicker oil. Put it on a little brush hog and work it hard for a couple hours then drain and refill with a high quality 10W30 and run it some more. If the engine has as few hours as you think it shouldn't burn much - if it does burn oil then go with 10W40 or 15W40.
