Reman vs New

When you buy parts do you prefer a reman part or a new one? Are there parts where new is pretty
much always better or vice versa?

You can't paint it all with the same brush.

A lot depends on the part, and who the remanufacturer was. Some so called reman outfits just fix what was wrong and call it reman.

In the early 1990s, I worked for a couple years as an outside salesman for a private label auto parts company. Basically, it paid the bills until I got a better offer.

Anyway, one of our main lines was reman starters and alternators. The company that rebuilt them had the right idea. All units were completely disassembled and bead blasted. Then reassembled with all new replaceable internal parts. Alternators automatically got new diodes, brushes, voltage regulators, etc.

They had, however, people on the assembly line doing sloppy work.

They hated to see me come into the plant. According to them, a salesman was some dumb-azz out there selling whatever they chose to supply him with. They weren't used to a salesman walking into the plant wearing a dress shirt and tie, carrying an alternator he'd warrantied, tearing it down in front of them and showing them where they'd screwed it up.

I caught several consistent mistakes they were making that led to early failure of their units. Statistically, at the time the nationwide failure rate for all reman starters and alternators was 8%. When I started that job, they're rate was 18%. When I left the job they were down to 7%.

As I said above, it all depends on several variables.

Back when I was a parts manager at a Case-IH dealer in the 80's we NEVER installed a NEW Case-IH alternator unless the unit was under warranty.
Failure rate on them was 20 to 50 percent.
The failure rate on reman alternators we got from HyCapacity was very low. They are the same company we got reman torque amplifiers for the IH tractors from.
So just because it is new doesn't necessarily make it better than a true reman. DOUG

I always thought if you couldn't do your job right, maybe you shouldn't have a job and shouldn't be able to get on welfare either.

Depends if the part is for a parade queen collector tractor or for a front-line tractor and a daily driver.

Depending upon what you are working with, a QUALITY re-man in the US part could very well be better than a new part today, if the only ''new'' choice was sourced from ''The Land of Almost Right''.

Depends on the part and supplier. My luck with JDReman is terrible. Had dealer change a water pump on a 4230 tractor two weeks ago. They got two reman pumps, both leaked before we started the tractor. I finally told them to get parts and rebuild mine.

I don't stand to make a single cent from this, however I would recommend HyCapacity.
Look them up, they do have a brand new water pump for your tractor.
Just look up Deere 4230 then put water pump in the search engine.
At this time you will need to buy new, no remans available. DOUG[/u]

I've bought parts where the only choice I had was reman, because the parts store had stopped ordering new. There reasoning was, why order new when everyone orders reman?? Kinda hard to argue with that logic, especially when it was his money buying the parts.

Never again will I buy a rebuilt alternator. I got 2 bad ones in a row, further adding to the uncertainty of why the security system in the wifes Impala was in the fail mode. New alternator, security trip (no start) gone.

In.the case of a water pump, best option by far is to do the reman yourself using quality parts.

We always referred to reman alternators as "spray and pray." Since so many were defective we thought they just spray painted them silver and prayed they worked for the 30 day warrantee. Same for starters.
