So I did a bit of basic trouble shooting. Had the ignition switch turn on and used a jump wire from the battery to the ignition side of the coil and when I touched the battery I had a spar so that told me the ignition switch had gone bad. It is a universal key ignition switch I got at O'Reilly's and when I turned it on it didn't feel right.

Unless you used a voltmeter how do you know if the switch isn't good and the ballast resistor is bad?
I install a fuse in all my ignition circuits.
Could be a bad fuse..

I jumped the ballast side of things so as not to over voltage the coil. I had to use it so the test was to start with just a test but then it was hooked up so I could use it to mow some grass with

Not sure how long ago it was that I replaced it but yes it is not all that old. But sadly things no longer last like they did at one time

Sounds to me like you applied a full 12v to the coil and bypassed ballast.

The jumper wire bypassed the switch and any wiring related to it up to your connection point, be it the ballast resistor or coil. The switch may be bad; however, the switch might be ok, the problem could be a bad connection, broken wire, etc. in that circuit (before or after the switch). Your test wire just shows the problem is in that circuit, further diagnosis of that circuit should be done to find the exact problem, before just replacing the switch. A test light and few minutes should pinpoint the problem in the circuit.

I have a couple old JDs that have finicky push pull switches and I can tell if they are getting a connection by watching the ammeter if the points are closed

Ah but I left out the fact there is a bear spot on the wire going from the switch to the ballast resister that I use to hook up a hot wire

Had a similar issue with my Jubilee several years back. Incorporated a small clearance light right next to the key switch that gets power from the coil side of the switch. That way I know I'm getting power to the coil now.
