Clutch Replacement Cost

What would you guys think would be the rough cost to split the tactor, and replace a two stage clutch,on a Massey Ferguson 255 diesel, with a front end loader?
Thanks

the thing to do would be visit the service guy doing the job. or u talking parts alone. plus a big benefit for u to remove the loader. little to go on here as not even a labour price.

No idea the cost. I would split the tractor myself.
My neighbor had a broken wrist. It took us about a half day to split his massey 35 tractor, replace the clutch throw out bearing and put it back together. It might be a pain to remove the loader. Time is money.

Biggest problem, a dealer has to charge at least $100/hour and some won't work on anything they don't sell.

I know a man in Hamlet, Indiana. He has a business and only works on old tractors..

Good luck finding someone that works exclusively on an old tractors.

Parts will be cheap compared to labor cost..

Most likely Trkr has already visited the shop and gotten a price, and doesn't have the means to remove the loader or he wouldn't even mention it.

I paid a guy a year ago 500 bucks to split my Farmall C and gave him a sixty dollar tip. It was a simple job compared to your Massey with a loader. He was happy and I was glad he did it.

fastest tractor split i ever was part of was with the Liberty Ky guys,, They had My 430 CASE Diesel apart in 25 minutes and the clutch and throwout bearing and pressure plate setting on the floor.. that evening i dropped the parts a Ky clutch, They shipped New and rebuilt parts to Liberty, who then put all back together and adjusted properly. The following Saturday they were back with my 430, grinning in My back yard at 8 A.M wanting to know if i had coffee made.////The worst was paying 2000 to split my 1070 Power Shift, the story was the power shift was stuck ,Many Here think and,I believe, they put the torque limiter in backAsswards when they overhauled the engine. .

well who knows, why dont we get all info? loader removal is 1/2 hr. not counting the rails. i hardly would think a person would get a clutch
job done for less than 1k. might be double once apart and parts are added up. pilot brg, throw out brg, clutch disc , and pressure plate is
all in the job, not yet counting a flywheel resurface, or a leaking seal. might be 2k.go price all the parts i said, add them up then add
about 1k for labor. see how far off i am then. i am talking dealer or actual mechanical shop doing a professional job.

No where near the same, but I had to split my TO-20 to tap the ring gear forward and it was 2 hours flat. But that was not replacing any parts.

Trkr isn't answering any of our questions or providing any more information until he gets an answer that he likes. Then he'll head off to the repair shop with his laptop in hand and show the proprietor one of our answers, but none of the others. Smart feller .... good luck !!

A lot will depend on the loader. If a quick attach model cheaper than one bolted to the rear axle and mounted to the front end like the older ones. Ours takes half a day to get the loader off then you can split it. I would take the loader off first then price the split job. Like said throw out bearing, clutch disks, p plate, pilot bearing, and adjustment, facing flywheel optional. While there look at rear main seal.

No, I'm an old fart non computer guy. Come here once a day usually. Been out all day, just got home.

And for the guys that are helpful, it's a quick attach loader, off in 15 minutes.

We did a double split and left the loader on. This was on a Ford 981 when we converted to a 961.

This tractor belongs to a horse lady down the street. I try and help her out with problems when I can.
I put a clutch in this tractor for her 30-40 years ago, neither of us remember exactly when, but it's been a good while.
Clutch went out, she asked me if I could do it again. All I was trying to find out what this would cost nowadays so I can charge her less than what the shops charge, I have no idea.
Hope this helps with all the smart asses out there, and thanks to the helpful guys.

If any of the loader mounting brackets straddle the split line they will need to be removed too. It will be much cheaper for you to do that work yourself rather than pay shop rate to remove and re-attach them.

Trkr, please post how long it takes you to do it. I charge $50/hr as it s not my business but hobby time extra cash in my pocket. I do it to help the people out and keep our classic iron running. I would figure 5-6 hrs give or take, that includes running out to get parts and incidentals...

thanks now we know what your after. and hope i am not classed as a smart azz. i answer what i read.

Hard to believe a shop would charge less than $1,000 for labor these days and would be surprised if the bill wasn't $2,000.

Well CH,
From a natural born SOB here, whether you're right or wrong, I still applaud your calling it as you see it.
I got jumped on tool talk a few days ago for being indifferent to a man's feelings.
As if feelings can make his welds one bit better.

I will, but it will be a while. Our farm was sold a few years ago, and I don't have a shop anymore. Older son has a shop, heavy equipment mechanic, said we would do it there, but he's at least a month out, he's so busy.

I don't get on this website much, shame to see how cynical and assuming some people are when you ask for help. Seems to be the way the world is going now.

And thanks to the people that really wanted to help.

I had the clutch replaced in my JD 1520 2 years ago by a local independent shop, I removed the loader and delivered it to them. I bought the parts, they did the labor, labor cost was $1200.It had a quick detach loader also. Hope this helps, they were not a dealer so labor rates were less.

When you don't provide enough detail, people fill in the blanks. You just asked a vague question. A couple of minor details such as the part about you are trying to quote a job for a neighbor, would have shut down most of the "cynical" comments.

This is the WORST place to ask questions like this. Not many mechanics here, let alone mechanics with specific experience doing that specific job on that specific tractor. It's mostly old farmers who assume any mechanic that's in business is out to shaft everyone they do work for.

Well you are right about one thing, this is the worst place to ask a question. Even though I was asking for a rough estimate. Hopefully from someone who had a recent experience having a clutch replaced. I guess I was brought up different. If I don't know an answer, I'm not going to make a smart aleck assumption, post it here, like running to the dealer with a computer in my hand.
Again, thanks to the ones that actually mean't to help.
Don't fret, I won't be back.Have a nice day all.
