A good job of plowing is a lost art...when we were young we took pride in keeping our ends straight and laying out nice sod water ways..we would step off the lands,,Dad would tie his handkerchief on a stick and make me stand still till he made the head land,,that was our guidance system back then..

The little bit i know about plowing contest, that guy is going to fast, from what i been told, your suppose to be able to see each furrow, from the next!

True story: The next door farmer was setting out his opening furrow and lined his tractor up with a hay stack in the field opposite. Unfortunately, the hay stack was a load of hay being drawn slowly along a road between the two fields.

There is still a bit of ploughing done around here, but not much, and I have given up on the plough now also. Just takes too much fuel. Wheat goes not till into soybean stubble, zero dollars spent. Soybeans go into last years corn field , for me two passes with 14 foot wide high speed tillage piece, and use conventional planter. Maybe use 25% of the fuel I would with conventional tillage methods . I have gone to watch a few ploughing matches, not very exciting stuff

I guess I was not a very good plowman then. I just lined up with a tree or whatever fit and went down through the turned around and went back adjusted for the back furrow so it would not be to deep in front and away I went. I didn't pace off lands and we used to plow around the field so the dead furrow was shorter for when we raised white beans. Opps can I say that now days. Dad tried it with the 6bottom plow and found it didn't work so well and we had quit raising white beans by then anyway.

You start out at county level then if good enough you go to regional, then to state then to national and then to world, Have a friend that is from Ohio get to world where he was beat out by a young lady plower., This was in South Africa. When you get up to top level the tractor and plow are furnished, you do not use your own. I was years ago asked to participate in thelocal but declined as had no way to get my tractor or plow there. Some others that went to state level. If you get up to state level it starts costing you a lot of money.

Thanks for the replies! The state contests are generally open to all who want to come, each state sets it's own eligibility rules. National plowing matches have contestants selected by their states, generally champions from the previous years state contests, there are case by case exceptions to this though. It is a fun sport that uses more thought than horsepower.
