Yesterday while out in central Kansas I saw this sitting beside Hwy 15..He may have put it there for fun since he knew that lots of tractor and steam buffs were heading to the Goessel,Kansas tractor and steam show..They were featuring Allis Chalmers this year.

I can believe that. There was a farm on the way to Aberdeen that still used a small round baler. Dad wouldnt even look at it on the way by. He had a bad experience with them. Dad said stacking small round bales was a challenge to keep the stack together because the bales kept rolling apart. That alone would wear me out. Both physically and verbally.

Neighbor was using an 8N and a roto bailer on this farm when I bought it 55 yrs ago. Remember them being very big in the far north in those days.

I always have to laugh when I see a D21 doing something like that. The AC dealer here use to have some big open house every year and I can remember going with Dad when the D21 came out. They had one there and everybody was saying that it was too big for our area. Last one I saw around here just sat most of the time with a 3pt round bale spear on it. All they used it for was to feed the cows.

Bruce: Believe it or not there is a fellow by Keene on hwy 2 just east of Bensfort road on the south side that I have saw baling a 7 or 8 acre field with a roto baler the last few years. The bales dont look great as windrows are too narrow, but he has them baled up non the less. I will have to disagree with wearing them out before the farmer wore out, as Dad had to buy a new one after wearing the first new one out. And he pretty much wore the second one out. Baled a lot of hay for himself plus a pile of custom work. Mind you this started in the late 40's and continued into the 70's. Also went thru a few clutches. Dad said the Allis WD worked well on the baler as he had a hand clutch on it.

My brother in law had one he pulled with an 1938 A John Deere. Talk about a workout between hand clutch and gear shift every bale. He liked it and did a good job of stacking. He would stack and I would feed bales to him. Not really fond memories, though.

Just got home from your road trip area Went and saw big Brutus ,what do you know about the junk yard on the west edge of Parson Kansas ?

I'm guessing that was just south of Highway 56 a few miles north of Goessel? That's a friend of mine who is a big A-C fan. Unfortunately he had to miss the show so he probably did this, as you suggested, to still show something to folks going down the highway even though he couldn't attend Threshing Days.

Thats Rick Trotnic whom has a huge collection of old tractors and much-much more...American Pickers was there a few years back.
