Slow starting then racing? Cause?

This happened with the Belarus 562 on the farm.

The last time I had it running prior to yesterday was about late September of last year. It was slow to start (crank a longer time). This was unusual for it.

Yesterday, went to start it to brush mow. A month ago when I was here, put the charger on the batteries for a couple of hours.

Temperatures in the 80s. Ran the glow plugs a little. I cranked and cranked it. Seemed like it would never start until finally it did catch a little. Next crank it took off racing and I pulled the shut off as I got scared it was running away. It did this 3-4 more times until finally it settled down and appeared to run normally.

At that point, put the mower on and mowed for a while.

This is a 4 cyl diesel and "old skool" tech I am sure. What could be going on with it?

I hope this does not repeat over the next few days as I am hoping to use it to drag some logs from downed trees away.

Could old fuel have any role? The fuel in it and in the barrel is probably 8yrs old or so. It looks OK for what that is worth.

My guess would be air. Does the injector pump have a place to put in oil? I use diesel fuel additive to add lubrication in all of my older equipment.

If I am correct that thing has oil bath air cleaner. If it
got water in it Im not sure if it could suck the oil in
and that would cause it.

racing as in how, over speeding? what position was the throttle in? old fuel that has gummed the pump up possible. add some 2 cycle oil and
fuel conditioner.

Usually just have partial throttle. This has the shut off combined with the throttle so you pull throttle full backwards to shut down. So, nudge throttle part way up (but not full) when starting is the usual thing.

I don't know if it over-revved but sure went faster than I was expecting and it did it a few times on repeat start attempts with me getting nervous and killing it. This thing revs slow and low, haha, otherwise.

It does have a oil bath air cleaner. Tractor has been inside so I would not think rain got in there....

I don't know about lube on the pump. Unfortunately, I don't have the manuals here (they are at home, oops).

A few years ago I had the head off for a new head gasket. So, had to remove all the injector lines from the pump. When it all went back together, it started right up w/o issues and has not done this behavior before.

It seemed to run totally normal once the racing stuff was over with. I've not tried to start it again after setting a day but will try again once the rain is over.

I did look around the pump area for fuel leaks but didn't see anything.

I'm with Rustred on the oil and conditioner. If the pump stuck and then came loose it will probably stick again in the future. I would run it for a good day and when ever I was out there would start and run it for a half hour or so preferably on a load each time. This would be to keep it loose and lubricated. If it has an oil reservoir check that it has adequate oil in it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Picked up some 2 cycle oil and fuel conditioner this morning.

Fortunately, the tractor started right up today w/o issues. Dumped in about 1/2 qt of the oil and 8 oz of the conditioner. Fuel tank is ~full and about 30+ gallons I think so close to the dose, haha.

I had it running a couple hours while dragging large tree branches and logs from the field to the brush pile.
