301A Scrap Pile

It is nice to be able to work instead of working on it. The hydraulic system was a real pain to get working right. Picture before and after.

Engine was deliberately wrecked by pouring sand, gravel, pecan shells and water in the intake. Center cylinder froze and busted from the inside. Crank case breather tube left off and hood gone so water rained down in the engine. Cam shaft and two lifters were frozen. The engine block and head survived.

Using the chain to move that and other big rocks to make steps off patio. Almost didn't pick up the first one but the one in the picture was not a problem.

Glad to see someone else with a yellow JD. My 401B looks just like your 301A without the bucket. I also had to do a lot of engine repairs Stan.

Wow that's awesome you were able to save that, kudos to you for the time put into your project.
We can't go buy a decent machine anymore, so at least we know what we have after fixing a project up like yours. Again, congratulations!
Thanks for sharing positive progress!

When I went to look at it, I tried to walk away from it. But I made the classic mistake of making an offer. Well it followed me home.

I wished the engine was the only problem I had to deal with. It was used mainly as a loader tractor. Three point and PTO were not hardly used. There was a 1/2 gap between bucket pin and boom bushing. Had to build new pins and bushings. Did a lot of welding.

Ok I'll ask the question: Why did someone do that? Very nice restoration, btw, a lot of time and effort and it shows. Gerrit

State and local gov have been known to destroy equipment so they have an excuse to force buy new.

That's sad to destroy a perfectly good engine. The sand and water would have been enough, sounds like they wanted to do a thorough job of it so they went the extra mile.

The county and state tractors around here that mow the roadsides and ditches always look like they're brand new. All cab tractors with what appear to be every option they could load them up with. Mostly JD tractors with all kinds of mowing setups. Gerrit
