Wouldn't it be interesting to know the rest of the story? Did they survive , prosper, is the family still on the farm, when did they get
a tractor, electricity, water, indoor plumbing. Is there great grand son president?

Or did they starve off from it by drought, locust, or poor management. Lost farm and went back to town. Great grandsons/daughters became bar owners and got rich. Who knows. Lots of options.

My grandfather's cousin was a failing Norwegian homesteader in N. Dakota. In about 1910 he got
desperate enough to head for work on the Panama Canal. On the train to Chicago, he visited
with a stranger who found out he was an oxen driver. He offered him a job to take care of
all the oxen on a sugar plantation on Martinique in the Lesser Antilles. He agreed to do it.
The family lived there for the rest of the century. I met his son about 20 years ago. He had
moved to Minnesota to retire. Sugar cane still grows, but goes mostly into rum. Big for hot
weather tourism.
