Water pump leak

I'm slow completing projects. I have an Oliver 88 that had a 77 gas motor in it when I bought it. I looked for years for an 88 gas motor for it and finally found one 6 or 8 years ago and brought it home. The water pump was busted, so I got a rebuilt from Napa and left it in the box till I was ready to use it. I did mention that I was slow completing projects, didn't I? I finally put the 88 motor in this year with the new water pump. I got the radiator on today, filled it with antifreeze and started it and pulled it outside and let it run for a while. I walked by and looked at it and antifreeze is leaking out of the weep hole. The pump turned over good and smooth, I'm guessing the seal has deteriorated and I'm pretty sure the guys a Napa will laugh at me if I ask about a replacement pump for one that I can't even remember when I bought it. What are the odds it will stop leaking after while when the seal gets used to being wet?? Can you even buy just the seal for it??

Most of times the impeller breaks and it has half of the seal on it. Mechanical seals are not easy to find, many, many sizes and material.

Some people claim that a few sharp raps on the end of the coolant pump shaft can disturb the seal into holding liquid .

I'm not giving it very good odds of stopping.

Good chance the seal was damaged during installation, or the rubber parts have deteriorated.

But you can try! Question is, can you trust it if it does stop leaking?

I rebuild a lot of water pumps here,,for Deere's,,I have seen people drive the seal in with a hammer and driver,,I think that can hurt the seal,, I press them in gently..like wiping a Baby's nose,,same with the impeller...it's hard to guess how yours was installed,,and it may run a bit and seal,,but not likely...Darn it..

Could not loose anything buy letting it run a for awhile. I bought a AC WD45 about 18 years ago. Spent a few months working on it and getting it painted. First time starting and running the tractor the water pump leaked bad, let it run for awhile ( dont remember how long) it stopped leaking and has not leaked since. Of course I have more luck than brains, sometimes bad luck but mostly good

I have pressed new seals in 2 cylinder Deere pumps and seen them leak a little until they have been ran for an hour or two. Might be worth trying. Age of the seal might be against you.
