I have a John Deere 1020 with a locked up steering assembly. The new one I ordered is different. The old one has a large I assume fill but in the middle, the new one does not. The new one has large hole in the bottom that I assume is for a hydraulic hose. Just trying to figure out if the new one will work or if I need something different. Im adding pics to help with my description. Any help is greatly appeciated.

Where did you get the new part and how was it determined that it was supposed to be correct for your tractor?

Looks to me like you are trying to replace a MANUAL steering gear with a power steering gear.

In addition to that variation, IIRC, the power steering gears can be for ''open center'' hydraulics or ''closed center'' hydraulics.

X2 what wore out stated. Your tractors original steering housing is for manual steering. 4Th - 6th photo housing is for power steering. I've read where manual steering housing has been replaced by power steering. What is casting # on housing painted green?

From viewing serial # tag it appears your tractor was built in Mannheim,Germany & those tractors didn't have option of open center power steering such as 1020's up to serial # 045,199 built in Dubuque,Ia.

Manual steering housing is shown in photo below.

I don't know your tractor but would say you were sold the wrong part. Send it back and get correct part.

You have a power steering replacement assembly. Add a tee fiting to the line in front of your brake pedals and run a hose to the housing and enjoy power steering. I have done several. Tom
