Here is a clip from the VH4D manual regarding oil. Starting on page 11 of this pdf, if you want to see all that the VH4D manual says about oil.

We have several that are ran hard in
the middle of the summer. I ran Sae
30 in all of them until recently and
switched everything over to 15w-40.
It has cured the mysterious oil
burning and somewhat increased
performance since the switch. I
wouldn't hesitate to use whatever is
easiest to keep on hand for a 1 size
fits all.

Ran one on a 214T JD baler for years. Used 30W but wouldn't hesitate to use 15W-40 as that is what I use in diesel tractors.
But, would probably use the 15W-40 recommended for gas engines.

ok everyone has there oil preference,..i would use castrol 20-50 without a dought. incase you dont know 15-40 is a diesel engine oil. not
that it will hurt anything but lots of people have no clue on oils. then engine work for there keep so give them good oil. i would be using
higher grade than 10-30.

Probably straight 30 was recommended back in the day. For summer work. Probably suggested straight 10 for cold
weather.

A good 10-30 would be fine.

That was really the only thing for gas engines back when they were new.
