Our county fair is going on this week and last night's grandstand show was the bus race.--We went and it was a good show--Packed house! One bus got broadsided between turn one and two and made a complete rollover but the real excitement was when one got bumped on turn four and went through the new cement wall-Nobody got hurt and the wall did its job. Almost all the buses were Cummins diesels and you could tell who had tractor or truck pulling buddies that knew where the fuel screw was. Nobody got hurt!!! It is good to see our fair is coming back-They had a pie auction on opening night and sold pies made by the fair queen candidates and they brought over $47,000 ---Tee

(quoted from post at 08:06:43 07/22/22) It's sad what fairs have become nowadays. Anything to entertain the many-headed, I guess.

Sounds like you're objecting to the bus race here? County fairs have had races, demolition derbies, etc. ever since there have been junk machines to race with. It's a tradition going back, heck, probably 100 years.

My county tried to revert to a fair where you went and looked at animals, vegetables, and pies. They got rid of all the rides, shows, and attractions. It failed so miserably in the first year I don't think they ever had it again.

Fairs are supposed to be FUN. Just because your idea of fun doesn't align with everyone else's does not mean you should fault them for enjoying themselves.

Dang! I would have loved to see that. Used to love the fair.... Just don't do anything cool like that around here.

I miss the antique tractor pulls, the one which featured tractors that came in out of the fields, bone-stock, and wearing their work clothes.

I have zero interest in hot-rods, V8 powered lawn mowers, and "tractors" put together with oversized Erector sets.

Exactly!! I also miss the horse pulls and harness racing. The stuff that actually required talent and skill.

What kind of pie did you get me? I'm not fussy when it comes to pies. Just put it in the freezer till Sigourney and then bring it along.

Our fair usually has a combine demolition derby but I am not sure if they have it this year, and I do not plan to go anyway. It sure is fun to watch those guys destroy those combines though.

a guy that used to jockey used school buses from NY State schools to Florida and sell them to Church's and Harvesting Contractors I am sure I would have enjoyed it. But when they took the Farm out of the Fairs we stopped attending What is a Fair with out a Tractor, or Chicken, that got loose and running around or a Country Music Band, or the Rides, And all the good things that make up a County Fair ? Thank god for Fy Wheels here in Florida. , Old Scovy

Just imagine being at a County Fair, and here comes Sweet Feet, and Her Husband on that old Farmall Regular.Down the Mid Way. Tell me you wouldn't stop dead in your tracks and watch that sort a thing go by. How much better could it get? The Old Scovy.

Funny how people love mayhem and destruction, even if it is sort of 'made up' mayhem and destruction. Wanna watch somebody build something? No thanks. Wanna watch somebody destroy it in five minutes? Where do I get a ticket?

I'm with Zachary on this one, I'll go one step further, the dumbing down of society. Kinda like real amateur wrestling vs the professional variety ..... which one is on TV?

I prefer to see them saved for those of us that use them. When they are gone there s no getting them back.

Old Svovy,

Well, we would - but we are getting old and tired... ESPECIALLY the hand-crank winch operator (and that is not me, for sure). GRIN

When we had vacation in early July and we used the old rusty slip-scraper and the old B John Dere to haul some fill-dirt for some low spots by our septic tank (installed last summer)... passersby, sure did look twice. :)

I agree got to go with the flow ( find the money) those buses are going to end up in the junk yard
anyway this just speeds up the process

Always a sour puss in every bunch. Just because you're sucking lemons doesn't mean everybody has to. Too many people trying to talk down to others now a days.

Sounds like I offended you Sprint .... nothing sourpuss about my reply at all, just my opinion. Isn't that how discussion forums work? Does everyone have to agree? And if you don't then keep quiet? I'm sure my pro wrestling comment probably hit a nerve, you know it's all orchestrated right?

What is better--rusting away in a fence row--or going out in a Blaze of glory???---

I am lucky if I get a 5-dollar Sara Lee or Mrs. Smith pie. Neighbor kid was over and borrowed son's helmet for the bus races two days ago and said that he and his brother in-law bought one together for $1200-WOW--He runs a lawn mowing service and in-law is a Pioneer dealer.

When we use to put the pull on in town the concession stand liked those slow classes also--they got real bust when they were
pulling!!

The buses with the 5.9 Cummins go for around $1500 t0 $3000 around here and the repower guys buy them up---

Our Iowa State Fair in getting the same way--Used to have a NTPA pull in front of the main grandstand--now they replaced it with concerts and we get the Outlaws in a corner in the parking lot!!!!---

Not offended at all. Just didn't see the need for the negativity on a post about something some find fun using their own time and money. Takes all kinds take the world go 'round, I guess.

Hey--I looked around at the crowd last night and the crowd was full of alot of younger people-Having a good time--drinking a few $4 16 oz. beers and well behaved!!! This in N.E. Iowa and it made a old man proud!---Tee

At least rusting away in a fence row somebody may be able to get the part they need to be able to finnish getting their grop off. I HATE DEMOLITIN DERBYS. saw way to many machines and cars that were better than what I was usinf get destroyed. And that was just what the buss race was too. Not for me. I have not been to a fair in years, nothing for me.

We still have that first type of tractor pull, don't work it any more because of age and health. but worked behind the track for years.

There are possibly 500 busses setting here wating on the scrap man as the state has decided if it is 10 years old no longer fit for use no matter how good it is. Or if it is only a couple of years old but got enough miles on it to just be broken in good. What a wast of the tax payers monny.

Next state over has what they call 4H fairs with no rides or midway. They are the type of fair your area got rid of. Just too far for me to go. Last fair I was to I just went to the old tractor showthat was part of it.

Your in Ohio, nobody like individuals, churches, private schools want a ten year old bus from the rust belt.
They would prefer to buy used from south of Tennessee.

Destruction of anything I don't consider fun and then when I coused those parts they destroyed for my car or combine it was just agrivating. Car they destroyed same make, model and year of mine and in better condition than what I had to drive.

Our County Fair still does Out Of The Field 8k 11k 13k 15k classes. Are they all stock tractors? No, but most of them came off the baler and grain cart to the pull. It's actually happening this Friday. They used to do Grain Truck races which were great. They tried a Combine Demo Derby for a few years and for probably 15 years they did a Skid Loader Rodeo. One of the few free fairs on the east coast. No carnival rides though, and personally I like that there aren't any.
