Might have asked about this in the past, not sure.my 23 hp Koehler gas engine on my kubota is running fine with plenty of power but is using oil.as in half a quart per 1 1/2 hrs running time.is it feasible to rebuild or replace?about 950 hrs on the motor as far as I know (bought it used)

Sometimes they will rebuild, but more often they are more costly to try to save than just replace.

Then you are up against the decision to try and save it by cutting corners, which rarely works.

But nothing to lose by looking into it, just don't have real high expectations.

If you look on some of the lawn and garden sites you will find a lot of info regarding high oil consumption on your engine.

Several common problems with your engine seem to be head gasket leaks between oil drain back hole and cylinder and or bad reed valves.

Doing a compression test, leak down test, vacuum test, plug inspection should get you pointed in the right direction.

Also i am wondering if its worth spending the money on the mower with 900 hrs.I know the commercial grade mowers go much longer.the hydrostatic transmission is what I dont know how long it will last? The deck is fine

Well, its yours, it might be worth trying if you do the work yourself. (A ring job, I mean.)

I work in the small engine field and in the last 14 years I have only rebuilt two K-series kohlers for a customer. There is a lot of risk to the mechanic that a rebuild won't be satisfactory. Also the question comes up: Where do you stop replacing parts? The crank and rods are worn too.

If its not a Command series engine, you might try changing over to 20w50 and see what happens. Kohler stresses they want 10w30 in their Command engines to keep the hydraulic lifters happy and quiet.

Kohler had some engines that the rings did not seat from the factory. If this is a v-twin they also had problems with the head gasket blowing between the pushrod chamber and the cylinder head area. I had a single cylinder Command 15 hp engine last year that the exhaust valve lobe wore almost off the camshaft ad it was blowing oil out of the crankcase as well as by the rings. It was pressurizing the crankcase.
