Farmers is harvesting wheat by my house. Can someone explain the
head on this combine? Im used to seeing the heads with the
paddles that pull the wheat in. This one has a cover over the top of it why? Its not working in this field It is just parked there.

Moresmoke has said it. Also, those stripper headers have advantages and disadvantages. Not used a lot around here on wheat but there are some. Leaves a lot more unmolested straw standing. They are much more expensive than a conventional small grain header. Since they only take the head into the combine, there is less wear on the threshing parts and some claim faster travel. The only crop around here that they can be used on is wheat and we have lots of grain sorghum (milo) and they won't work on that. Best if you could see a picture of the head where it takes the wheat head off to make it clearer how it works.

Often times around here, we get a wind and rain storm just as the wheat is ready to cut and it goes down. I've seen guys cut wheat using the header control for soybeans. Wonder how the stripper head would work on that??

The stripper head doesn t have height sensors like a flex header. It does have gauge wheels on the back side that control the operating height. There is a pressure sensor in the combine lift circuit that will control the amount of down pressure on the header automatically.
