Tractor Safety

After reading paulsamwels post of his tractor accident. It brings back memories of the time my JD took off without me. Totally my fault. I should have put the tractor in park when I got off. Nothing like watching your best tractor heading for complete destruction. The mower was caught in the only ditch on the cliff keeping it from going to the bottom. This got my attention, this will never happen again. Stay safe out there. Stan

That reminds me of a story Baxter Black was telling. A guy had left a loader tractor hooked to the round baler sitting in the field overnight. When he got there the next day the battery was low. He didn't have jumper cables, so he decided he'd have to hook the pickup to it and tow it alone. He put the pickup in low and when he got the tractor rolling, he jumped out, ran back and got on the tractor figuring when it started, he'd put it in low to hold the truck back and he could run back up, jump in and stop it. Trouble was, when the tractor started, it lurched enough that the chain came unhooked. The truck took off, headed right for a steep embankment. He managed to speed up and get the loader under the back bumper and lift the rear wheels off the ground just before it went over.

That sounds about like a Baxter Black story. I can just imagine him telling the story too. May he rest in peace.

To this day, recollecting our JD 2010, with JD spreader hooked up, and wide front with a loader, ended up on the 2nd floor of what was a huge barn with heavy floor joists. I cannot come to terms with how it ended up there, spreader hanging off after rolling down the hill behind the barn. Speed had to be a factor. It would appear a ramp would be needed to land there. One of the hired help was involved. He not injured, no damage to the tractor.

I only remember the hole in the wall as a youngster. How a tractor with a manure spreader hooked up can even do that is beyond me. How they got it out of that predicament without any problems is also something I never figured out. My father likely remembers more details. Same tractor is the first one I ever sat on as I recall, moving the shift lever into neutral and it rolling a few feet with me on it ! It was always parked by the front of the barn with a ramp to the spreader. Tribal elders were shocked, and were right there when I did this ! I didn't get in any trouble, but then again my folks were not to keen on looking after me like they should have at a young age just the same. People still say that to this day. Somehow I made it this far though LOL !!

I had to get my crawler, and hooked up two chains in case one came off. I sat on the tractor as it came up. Stan
