Tractor will not start

I have a JD1010. Today I tried to start my tractor. It started and ran then stalled out. I tried to start right after and nothing. No clicks no nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Once that happened to me and the battery died instantly.

Did you put a voltmeter on the battery?
99% of the time bad cable connection.

well what are we to do ? have you at least looked at the battery and connections would be one place to start. sounds like your first time on
a tractor.

Lots to check. First and cheapest is to clean all connections from battery to starter, then to solenoid or switch, then check for voltage at battery then at starter. Then check again with starter rolling engine over. Now if none of this changes anything or bad battery or connections then fix and go to work. If still nothing then you need to check starter by removing and check with a battery. It will jump fast and hard if good when connected to a good battery so have it held good with a vise or better on the floor with a wood block on each side and a board over top and a foor holding down on the board so the starter is tight and not free to jump around. If it works then you need to check for bad cables like broken inside the ends or the insulation. If those check out you must have a relay, solenoid, or switch that is not making the connection. Will need to check for voltage on all of these things.

i went back out later and I got clicks. Everything except the battery is from 1962. The battery posts are clean, and connections are good and tight. I am replacing the starter solenoid first then if that dosen't fix it going to replace the key switch, but I think the solenoid will fix it.

Hello Nicky welcome to YT. First let me apologize for
any replies that you have gotten that may seem a little
bit of a ..put down.. so to speak or maybe contained
information that was over your head. I am sure you
realize there are many personalities and styles of
returning information to you. For the most part a lot of
mechanical minded folks hang out on here. A lot of us
think we are a step above those who commonly post
on here with their problems. Point is if someone posts
with an electrical problem we often say that it an easy
check with your test light or volt meter. Well many
folks do not have these items, upon hearing that we
set back in our chairs and scowl saying ..what idiot
would not have one of those?.. One reply you received
reported that his battery failed instantly, that is a very
rare occurrence. So now to get to the meat of my reply
we ..high and mighties.. often forget your tractor has a
built in test system of sorts, that is if it has a working
lighting system. When you try to start it turn the lights
on, when you get the click if the light stay bright the
battery or connections are most likely NOT your
problem. On the other hand if the lights go out or go
dim the battery and connections are then suspect. It
sounds like you have resolved to just try replacing the
solenoid, that is an approach. Now to return to the
..mechanical minded.. person I am l would like to verify
the solenoid is the problem before replacing it. I would
suggest you purchase a simple automotive test light,
auto parts stores carry them. On the starter solenoid
one post has the cable from the battery usually the top
one on those style Deeres if it is like others of that era.
The check for the solenoid would be to test for the
bottom terminal to light the test light when you
activate the key or button to start it. A hint here to help
you do this by yourself is to use the clip test light lead
to connect to the lower terminal of the solenoid and
then ground the probe end to something metal.
Sometimes I stick it in beside the bolt on the negative
battery terminal clamp. After all this if when you
energize the key or button to start if the solenoid is
powering that lower terminal and lighting your test
light the problem is in the starter itself. Hope this
helps!

This may be a late reply, but I just went thru the same problem with my 1010. It came down to the battery being dead. Had generator rebuilt, all the connections checked, battery showed 12 volts, but just a click. Word of
advice is check the simple things first.

Please tell what you see, hear, smell, feel, or taste that tells you that it is the solenoid. Sharing this information can help get you better information.

replaced the key and it started. So all the "new tractor guy" comments you are wrong. Even if I was a new tractor guy your help is trash. There is a reason that people come to these sites for help and if you want to be the only one here your doing a great job on achieving that status. If you aren't going to help someone who needs a little help then stay away your no good to anyone. As for all the loose connections everything was tight.
I dont have the money to buy anything newer so I deal with what I got.

I'm sorry but this is a more than a bit unfair to whomever it was directed at. We can't read your mind. We can only go by what is in the post to judge your level of experience.

You did not mention anything about checking battery connections until pressed about it. All you said in the initial post was "It doesn't start." This forum gets hundreds of posts like that per year from people with little to no tractor/mechanical knowledge or experience.

The key switch is totally out in left field. That's the LAST thing you'd expect to be the problem in a "no start with a click" situation.
