1968 Ford 8000

Hello All
My twin sons are interested in possibly purchasing a 1968 Ford 8000 for pulling. Could anyone tell us what size rear axle it has? (Dimension and Circumference). And can a bigger axle be put in?

Not a good choice for a pulling tractor. The transmission was a big problem on the early 8 and 9 thousand series tractors. The
first ones were not pressure lubricated and were noted for galling gears to shafts. The engines also did not respond kindly to
having the pumps turned up for more power. The engine temps would rise with the extra fuel and burn pistons. I'm a Ford guy but, i
agree with others that a IH tractor will be better suited for pulling.
 


I pulled with a 9000 for fifteen years. I had a lot of fun crushing the red and green and orange ones. However there is a big difference between an 8000 and a 9000. A 9000 originally made a lot more power than the 8000 and was capable of making a lot more. Mine was estimated at 500 HP with little more than pump work. You can put a turbo on an 8000, and since puling competition is usually very easy on a tractor they wouldn't hurt it any. You misunderstood their question of the size of the rear axle. They are probably asking about wheels. Most came with 34 inch wheels with 34x23 inch tires. I converted mine to 38 inch, for better gearing for the track.
 
HA ha ha! One of the twins agrees. But this twin has a chance to get this tractor. It has a new Detroit motor in it. We just need to know the axle thickness. We are worried that if he puts it in the 18,000 lb. class and pulls all that weight, the axle will snap. (It did about 5 years ago and was fixed)
So are we able to put a thicker axle on it. Thanks again!

I pulled mine mostly in 8,000# to 11,000#. Usually you want to get in as light a class as possible. I sometimes pulled in a 13,000# but weighing only 11,000#. I still won though with speed instead of weight. They must be pulling stoneboat on concrete then?
 
I measured my 8000 axle at 3.750 diameter. A little math will get you the circumference. Someone on the Ford board down below may be able to help you with the
interchange with a 9000. Have fun with your project!

This was obviously a transfer sled pull as opposed to stoneboat. There were a few of the stoneboat guys there though. I knew about your 8000 and about breaking the axle. As you probably know it is on youtube. I have also hooked at Cliff Clark's in Williamsburg and at Bolton Fair. I am in southern NH.


You should check with Jason or Corey at Forrester's New Holland in Chambersburg PA. They pull Ford/NewHollands all over the country, and if there is an axle change-out like your twins want to do they would know about it. I sent an email to a puller from down your way that would probably know about how the axle was repaired.
