Ive been working on a JD model 40 standard and the adjusting rod and nut on the brake actuator is missing. Doesn't seem be available old post suggested making one out of threaded rod, If anyone has done this how long is the rod supposed to be diameter and thread of rod. this rod adjusts the brakes --I think maybe why have no brakes

Brakes are independent - if the left one goes out, it does not affect the right one.

I have substituted a NF cap screw (about 3 long) with two nuts to replace that rod.
It's a little hard to get two wrenches into the axle housing to lock the nuts, but other than the head of the capscrew sticking out from the housing, it works just fine.

Hope this helps.

You can still get the ''rod''/stud M1963T (some $50) and the special nut M949T (some $7)from DEERE.

The lock plate M2179T that should have kept the stud from falling out is available for $1.52.
