making a little hay

You have to feel sorry for them that they miss out on the REAL hay experience. The sweat in the eyes, The chaff all over the arms, Muscle spasms from dehydration. The dad can probably describe to the young fellows how it was.

Once it was said that all a farmer needed to earn a living was 40 acres, a mule, and two sons. Those days are long, long gone.

They are a custom outfit. So they need to make those kinds of numbers to make it work financially. More hay more money and on to the next job. So no surprise they are using that much labor and equipment. I worked for a guy in KS that had 10 9600 combines and supporting equipment. 3 Grain carts 1 840 and 2 1240's all Kinze with a Stieger tiger on one and a 876 Versatile on the other with a 4955 on the small one. It was the most efficient actually as it was quick and easy to maneuver. Then he had 5 tandems with pups and 5 semi's to keep grain hauled away in wheat and needed another truck for each 5 combines to keep up in corn. In ID the farmer had enough trucks to keep it hauled in 100 bushel per acre irrigated wheat so we let them haul.
