What is this weed (grass) and how would I control it? Getting more and more in one field. Seems to like the low spots with heavy soil. I'm not baling this, just mowing if for now but I'd like to get the field back in shape. It's very rough.

Do a google search. Is there any Yellow Nut Sledge with it? You might try spray, throw and mow. You said it is rough, did you mean the ground was rough? Maybe you want to spray with round-up, plow and start over.

Yup, it's Yellow Nutsedge. Seems to grow in wet areas. Once it get started, it'll spread. It's avaseive. I think I used Dual to kill it, back in the 80's.

The only real cure for nutsedge is an application or two of Round-Up late in the growing season before frost. At that stage the herbicide is taken down into the roots and nuts. There are other herbicides which work fairly well in fruit crops but I'm not sure what's labeled for hay.

WNY, I do have some yellow nutsedge, but more of this. Google says most likely fox sedge. Yes the ground is very rough but I don't have the wherewithall to plow it just now.

Thunder will set it back and not kill the grass. Sedge Hammer will handle the Yellow Nut Sedge and probably the Fox Sedge, but both are very expensive and not available for use everywhere. Round-Up will kill or set back anything green. I would probably try spray, throw and mow at this time of the year. I'd throw winter rye and/or wheat and maybe some clover. Prices on all herbicides and fertilizer has doubled in the last year, so follow the directions. More isn't always better!
