Garage door opener

My MIL's garage door opener recently quit working, motor will run, but not move the chain. Wondering what to look for or get a new one as this one is probably 25 years old. Any preferred brands or ones to stay away from? It's a single door, maybe 8' wide, 7' high? Thanks in advance for the help.

Unplug the AC power and take the cover off. Most likely a plastic gear has stripped teeth. What brand is this? You can most likely buy or order new gears. Make sure the door operates smoothly and easily so the new gears do not wear unnecessarily.

Of course, the opener will be down for a week or more while you wait for parts to arrive, then phiddle-phart around procrastinating on doing the job...

Or, you can run down to the Home Depot, pick up a new opener, and while it's fresh in your mind and taking up space in your vehicle, run over and install it in a couple of hours.

Replacing an opener isn't too involved as you can usually re-use the mounting brackets.

If it is a Chamberlin, Sears or Lift Master which are all Chamberlin's. The plastic gear inside is gone. I have new gears on hand and have it down to how to change them with out getting it all out of whack. $20 part. I dont know what brand yours is.

As said, it is probably a stripped gear.

The emergency rope has not been pulled has it?

I have had excellent service from the Chamberlin/Lift Master belt drive models.

Had not so good with the screw drive. Some like them, I don't. Short lived, noisy, drip grease.

Whatever you get, the door balance and tracking are essential for proper operation and long life.

Good afternoon, all: While the topic is open, I would like to mention my Genie opener whose remotes (the clickers I keep in the cars) work ok, but the wireless keypad on the garage wall does not make the opener operate. The local agent wants $100.00 to come to the house and fix this thing. I had them here about a year ago, but it did not stay fixed. All advice welcome!!

I agree, Most of the time it's best to just buy new if it's 25
years old.. Good luck finding parts..
Your time and gas is worth something..

Rebuild parts and kits are available for almost all of them for around $20. I ve fixed both of mine the last few years. Lots of websites carry them.

It's a Stanley brand. Model 3200.52K. I'll be at the house Saturday, might dig into it , see if it's worth doing anything to.

The only opener I ever had that was a constant problem was a Stanley. I would not spend a penny to fix it and its 25 years old.
Have a brand new Genie from Home Depot. It works great. Have an old Liftmaster on another door and its been problem free. Also have had other Genies and they have had minimal issues.

Doubtful it is worth your time to try to replace the gear. If you can use the motor for something then bless you, but get a new one. Good grief - all the modern ones work off your cell phone and you can operate it from several states away if you wish. Don't laugh - when my daughter was TDY for the national guard she used that feature to let me into he garage so I could mow.

There are some advantages in staying with the same manufacturer even if it is not the best brand on the market. It is a lot simpler to remove and replace only the head unit and track in less than 30 minutes compared to removing the entire old system and then mounting all the brackets in slightly different locations, new sensors, stringing new wires, and new control buttons too. Another plus it that sometimes the old remotes will still work with the new unit, BTDT. Is there really a problem if the less-than-best replacement unit only lasts another 20 instead of 30 years?

There are repair kits for them. A set of new gears and bushings and it might be good for another 20 years. I have repaired one opener, so it can't be that tough to do.

I was going to ask if someone accidentally pulled the red cord and disengaged the door from the track; but since you said the chain is not moving, I assume that's not the problem.
