My dad s step mom thought it was hard on the transmission when the car was parked in gear. She parked in neutral, turned the front wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. This was back in the straight stick days.

Carried a 4X6 with a rope thru it on aF600 tender truck for 3 seasons. It had the drive shaft mounted drum brake that did NOT hold when in a down facing gate. Got to where i could open the door and toss it before backing in and hit it in proper unloading position 95% of the time. then pull away and reel it back in from cab. joked with the owner about having just enough rope to hang myself(hated tendering duty) the good old days..fred

My brake cables used to rust.
My 2007 GMC the cables haven't rusted.
I use the parking brake when I hitch up the
trailer. I have a backup camera. Set the parking
brake to keep the truck from moving when I put the truck in park..

I had an old Plymouth with a fluid drive clutch and the parking brake didn't work. I used a similar system to keep it from rolling away.

I never use my parking brake on my F150. I don't know why, I just don't. I do use it at times with my Dodge 3500 tractor hauler. Stan

In salt country either use the parking brake every time or never at all. Occasional use will leave you with stuck brakes.

When I had my rural mail route we were "supposed to" set the parking brake every time we left the vehicle. When you're driving from the passenger seat that's not very likely to happen. On my last couple vehicles I had my mechanic install an electric lock in the brake line--basically a check valve with a solenoid on it. Step on the brake, flip the switch, and the brake stayed on till you shut the switch off. It was only in the line going to one wheel, but it was enough to hold the vehicle in place. But mainly it was enough to satisfy the postmaster and prove that I was following the rules.

My cousins grandfather had a Dodge pickup with fluid drive. The passenger was responsible for the parking brake. You jumped out and determined which way was down hill and placed the 4 by 4.
