Hey i have a jd 6600 combine with a 329 diesel. It has an issue with shutting off, slowly dying down like its running out of fuel, for a few mins the engine runs like a top, one day i had running 2 hours no issues but any other time about anywhere from a minute at any amount of throttle itll die. I have good fuel going to injection pump justs replaced both pumps. And i ran a ground wire to fuel solenoid in injection pump along with tried hot wiring it still having a issue. Im thinking im going to have to send pump off but was wondering if there s anything else i could try before doing that. And along with if i send pump off im going to do all new injectors. Has a blue smoke sometimes during running and when it stsrts to die at full throttle has a grey smoke. Thanks

Sounds typical for clogged check valve in fitting that's attached to inj pump that fuel return line attaches to. Check vale gets clogged from deteriorating drive ring pieces. Loosen timing window so fuel can leak out. If engine operates correctly with window loose then drive ring in IP needs R&R.

Few causes 1 plugged sediment bowl 2 plugged return line from possibly the check valve going south 3 plugged kink in line to engine from tank or kinked return line 4 fuel cap is not venting.

Xs two what Tx Jim said, weight retainer ring failing inside injection pump. Confirm by running with the two screw pump side cover loose, if engine acts OK WITH the
fuel leak, but dies with cover tight pump needs repair. I go through several each month for the same issue.

Our 4420 combine with 329 engine was
acting like that and it was the governor
retaining ring in the pump that was coming
apart as TxJim described. We had the pump
rebuilt and all is well now.

The ring by itself is quite easy to change. Many Roosa manuals are available free online.
You can change the ring without modifying any adjustments, takes less than an hour if pump is clean inside, which is very rare.
