I didn't know Bill Gates is considered the largest owner

Gates is considered the largest private owner of farmland in the country with some 269,000 acres (108,860 hectares) across dozens of states, according to last years edition of the Land Report 100, an annual survey of the nations largest landowners. The Microsoft co-founder owns less than 1 percent of the nations total farmland.

Gates' firm, Red River Trust, purchased $13.5 million worth of land in two counties from wealthy northeastern North Dakota potato growers Campbell Farms.

Farming is one of the few tax write offs left to get. Imagine how big of write off he gets and not to mention all the government subsidies he can get from various programs.

Stay tuned, the ND Attorney General is looking into the deal as ND has anti-corporate laws pertaining to farming and ownership of farmland. Will be interesting to see if it gets ''greenlighted'' or some precedent is set against it. BTW, Gates is no stranger to the area, Mightgosoft has a large presence in The Valley, with a corporate campus in Fargo.

As the ND law works, Bill Gates the person is allowed to own all the farmland he wants. Red River Trust, or Bill Gates LLC is not allowed to own land unless he as a person is farming it.

Will be interesting to see if he tries to challenge it.

Sounds like it is approved, because the land will be rented out to other farmers rather than being farmed by the corporation.

That comes out to about 420 square miles of farmland, or roughly a square plot of just over 20 miles x 20 miles (400 square miles). Doesn't sound like much BUT if there are about 350,000,000 acres of farmland in the good old USA, Billy owns about 8% of that amount .... surprisingly high even though the 400 square miles doesn't seem like all that much. I think my math is correct ....

hat's hilarious! As if he cares one way or the other. Bill Gates is a shrewd businessman that knows how to make money, and it's hard to deny the huge advantages to owning productive farmland. Here in Maryland, farmland is taxed as if it were worth $300/acre. When it's sold, it goes for somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,000/acre.

I come up with .08%, not 8%. 269,000 / 350,000,000 times 100 to get a percent. Plus, per the USDA the total number of farm ground acres in the US is actually close to 900,000,000 so his share would be quite a bit lower yet, more like .03%.

Well, nobody said my math skills were all that good Brendon. I thought that 8% seemed a bit high. What does surprise me thought that Gates' farm land ownership total is only 20 miles by 20 miles, that doesn't seem like much. Whatever it is, I don't think his motive is to fleece the American public, he gives away lots of money to deserving charities etc. If he buys it and just sits on it then that's OK with me. I don't think his goal is to won the whole country.

hat is exactly right. He wants the population to eat the fake crap synthetic meat because he has money invested in Impossible Meat.

I wonder what i do wrong. the only thing i can write off when buying farmland is the interest i pay and the government payments have been so small that i can't buy enough fuel to drive back and forth to the FSA office to sign up!

est guess would be that Bill Gates can afford the best lawyers and accountants.

inda sounds like he has a fair investment in real meat, too. Hedging his bets?

I think pea is actually the big ingredient in his fake meat. Im sure plenty of soy proteins as well.

Blach.

He has it worked out to use the govt crp and other such programs to buy it all, sort of sell/ rent the poor stuff back to the govt, and keep the better stuff.

As well there are a lot of Green programs coming up to store carbon credits, and much more of that sort of stuff. He is big enough to get in on the ground floor of all those programs, help lobby thrm to help him, and set up to collect a few dollars per acre which wont help the typical farmer with 1000 acres but when you own close to 1% of all farm land that will be a very healthy yearly check.

The large scale of operation makes all these farm programs work out to big bucks when you can play the game big scale.

269,000 is his total land holdings.
240,000 is more in line with his farm land holdings.
Either way still chicken feed when you consider he is not in the top 100 of land owners.
John Malone owns 2.2 million acres; in fact 3 people own over 2 million acres and another 6 own between 1 and 2 million acres.

Gates biggest holdings of land is in Louisiana with about 67,000 acres.
One of the biggest tracks he bought here has been a heavily subsidized soybean farm long before Gates bought it.

Tom I am like you I read all these remarks about how the farmer is getting all these government handouts , and I just wonder how many have ever really farmed 2 or 3 thousand acres. Try putting 300 thousand in the ground in the spring and depend on the weather. I raised my last crop last year after about 60+ years. Yes I made money but farming for the government never made me much. Right now here in west Tennessee crops are burning up will be a lot of crops never pay the input copst this year.

But there is 320 acres next to the Air Force Base, near Grand Forks,if the US Goverment lets that sale go threw, there asking for trouble big time, and it's not Gates wanting to buy it!

Dairy farmers in 2020 or 2021 recievef 1000-1500 per cow from the government. If there wasnt enough money if it you wouldnt be in business.

I always find it ironic when people like to bash Bill Gates on computers that run Windows software. Where does he get his money from to buy all this land? We don't have a single Windows operating device in our house, it's because I don't like Bill, it's because we prefer other systems better.

Need to be a BTO. Some of the locals around here made millions off the Government. There is a website ( i forget what it is ) where you can look it up by location.

Better Bill Gates than a foreign owner... but not much! Check what the plutocrats in the World Economic Forum (WEF) are up to and you will have a better understanding of what Bill Gates is doing.

How does a law like that affect farms that bring in outside investors to fund expansions?

Bill Gates doesn't want 50% of us to exist, and he has some pretty radical ideas on how to accomplish that goal. The more you research that guy, the less there is to like. He's a nut job. However, he is a very rich, very intelligent nut job. He also considers himself a far, far, superior human being compared to the rest of us. Time to shut up before this gets poofed.

(quoted from post at 20:43:53 07/01/22) Would you rather MD taxes go higher so more $$$ can get sent into Bawlamore?
hat question makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
