Gate Construction Question

Which is the best way to build a gate (2x4 material) that will resist sagging?

The Left side with the longest possible vertical frame section?

The Right side with the longest possible horizontal frame section possible?

I need to redo a couple of gates the previous owner cobbled together and could not decide which way was better.

I would recommend corner brackets and/or gussets.
My guess is that the diagonal brace should go from the bottom of the hinged side and go up to the top of the outside corner.

Either one is good. as long as you put reinforcement plates (Nailing plates) on both sides of all 4 corners. The diagonal strut needs to be under compression (as you
show. Top nailing plates horizontal, bottom vertical. Jim

Privacy fence? We have installed 1000s
of gates in 23 years..... And have seen
1000s more.... They all gonna sag.
Especially with the crappy treated
lumber now days. It dries out and
shrinks. And screws and bolts get loose
when lumber dries out.

yes--keep the diagonal strut in compression--and it is standard practice to re tighten all fasteners occasionally

I would build the left gate, not the right gate.
The diagonal would push into the full height vertical vs just the very end of the vertical shown on the other gate.

On my gates, I put a tension cable and turn buckle top hinge to bottom latch using 1/8 aircraft cable and 1/4 inch lag style Screw Eyes. these can be adjusted tighter as weather takes its toll. Jim

I would run a cable from top of hinge side to bottom
of other side. I like using bolts and plates where
hinges are mounted. No screws as the never hold.

Both gates are the same just reverse view of them. I would use rough sawn lumber and oil it with used engine oil after building and while putting the bolts in to oil the holes and the bolts. I would also build just one loner gate and put a wheel under the end so it can roll and take the strain off the hinges. But then we used a couple old steel trusses for gates and used the wheel on them as 20 or so long gates. Worked good for many years with few problems. A car tire size wheel rolls well on terrain other than cement. rolls well if it is in manure from frozen and rough.

My instinct would be a hybrid. Long on the top outer but long on the hinge side bottom.

I've done that......works really well!
