Allis Chalmers only manufactured one model with a V-8 engine, the model 440. These are rare with only 173 manufactured. Being auctioned off this week along with about 20 other smaller Allis Chalmers tractors estate auction @ Tell City, IN. The talk is this might bring a healthy amount of money, since they hardly ever come up for sale, this one only showing 698 hours. This is a yesterday tractor for sure made around '74 - '77.

Why/how would you only have 698 on a 45 year tractor? How could that be a good investment when you were looking to buy it for farming? I thought farming was all about best utilization of assets?

"Allis Chalmers only manufactured one model with a V-8 engine"

Alice Chompers didn't make that thing, it was built by Steiger in Fargo.

The only thing ''Alice'' about it is the paint.

The auction company doesn't guarantee the hrs showing on the dash readout. This might be a collector tractor instead of a farming tractor. Yesterday's tractors don't have emissions requirements with d e f tanks or electronics that take a special mechanic service call to fix. Chances are this won't sell at a bargain price, some of his other less powerful tractors might be more suitable for farming or collecting.

There are four of them listed for sale on TractorHouse right now so they must not be all that unusual. And, the asking prices don't appear to be much different than what you'd expect for a regular Steiger Bearcat. If the hours are true it definitely puts this particular tractor into the special category, though.

I was going to say the only thing Allis is the emblems and the color. The rest is Stieger built in Fargo. Was not a well liked tractor around here with the triple nickel engine in them. The Stieger with the inline 6 engines were more popular and better received here. I only know of 1 sold around here and they bled orange. Farmed with everything from a WC to the 190XT series 3.

It was made in Fargo.at the Steiger plant, they used a Super Wild Cat frame etc,and the 555 Cummins engine, which was also used in the Versatile 700!

Somebody was on here recently mentioning that the IH (I think it was) V8 wasn't a tugger like the 6 cyl. I have no specs to see the differences in engine design that could/might validate that statement.

Made along side IH and Stieger at factory in Fargo. IH had Steiger install IH engine and final drives. Used IH gears in transfer case. IH air conditioning etc. Steiger frame, cab etc.

I have no idea what components Allis used in their version. Bet it was not all the same as Steiger or it would have a better reputation.

We had the 5th largest AC dealer in the US...He sold 3 new AC 440's and I think 2 of them ended up getting 6 cylinder Cummins in them as the V-8's were junk..A neighbor 10 miles east had one.

Don't think the model 440 is going to go for high dollar, current bid is 6700. There is a tricked out WD-45 that has a 7100 bid current. Never heard of a 45 going for that amount of money. Good looking tractor for parades. There is an low hour Agco gleaner combine with a 49,000 bid , don't see too many low hr combines at that price. This is online bidding only, closing on Wednesday 12 or 2 PM. No reserves. His collection had almost every model Allis dealers sold except the D-21. Just a very rare find in orange auction tractors on one sale bill.

A nicely restored D21 sold at auction at Tilbury, Ontario last Saturday for $61000. CDN ( approximately $47,000. U.S.). There was a 6030 Deere in the same sale that went a tad over $72,000. Cdn. I would doubt that either tractor will ever see much field time in their future!

I watch stuff sell on Purple Wave all the time - not uncommon for items to double or triple in price the last hour of the auction.

The V8 (DV550) used in the 1468/1568 two wheel drive tractors didn't have much (any) more HP than the I6 IH diesel engines and burned a lot more fuel, but they made up for it by not being as reliable. The V8 used in the 68/86 4X4 tractors was a monster (DTV800) 798 cubic inches of power. We had a 4568 growing up and that thing was pulling horse - the only issue we had was keeping a starter in it until the local dealership realized they sold us the wrong starter three times in a row at nearly $700 each - in 1980 dollars. That tractor was only started when it was going to go to work - otherwise it sat. I believe it was sold with only about 5000 hours on it.
