gas shut off valve replacement

The tank for the c was empty for over a year. The seal dried out in the sediment bowl. I gave up on it and put in a street L pipe fitting. I put a small plastic looking shut off valve in the gas line. It quit passing gas yesterday at a tractor show where I had it for sale. I removed it and got it running again. Any recommendations on a good valve that will last?

Get a brass or stainless ball valve probably be $10.00 now they will have a stainless ball with either a brass or stainless body to them so should not become a rust problem later down the line. Good plumbing shops or spray parts house will have them. I don't know if a Propane type gas valve would last there.

X2 Regular plumbing WOG rated ball valve. Brass body, stainless ball and Teflon seals. I use an inline filter after the ball valve. When the filter fills up with crud from the tank, I take it off and toss it. Some days I can even change the filter without getting gas on my hands.

The aftermarket sediment bowl valves have a bad reputation across the line. You may luck into one that functions, but probably will have problems with it.

I never have tried going to the dealer, that might be a better option, but then again you might get a marked up aftermarket.

You really don't need the sediment bowl with ethanol gas, but you do need the strainer screen. If you can come up with a way to stand up a screen in the fitting inside the tank all the better. Then use a brass or stainless ball valve below it.

I would be cautious using an inline filter, they are not compatible with gravity flow systems.

There should also be a screen in the fitting at the carb.

I tried to get the sediment bowl to seal. I gave up after many attempts with different seals. Yes, I would like to have the bowl on the tractor, but I failed to get it to work. I even tried a different bowl from a different tractor. It really sucks to be leaking gas 15 different times. Yes I gave up.

I will look for a brass or SS valve.

I use sediment bowls from tractor supply, Napa, Amazon...... And clean, repair and reuse old ones, the screen and cork gasket are usually from tractor supply. Never any issues. Over tightening the glass is usually why they leak. I use yellow gas pipe dope on threads. Installed 30+ so far this year. No leaks. And they are great filters......

Any carb that drips when not being used gets a 12v solenoid valve. Both my Terramites came

with a solenoid.
My Jubilee, Farmall C, and any lawnmower that drips has one..

I got them from ebay.

Go to McMaster Carr and look for mini ball valves. One quarter turn and they always work. Come in 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, and maybe 1/2 pipe and male and female.
