We just bought a John deer 70 its runs but when the clutch is disengaged it makes a terrible noise as soon as you engage the clutch it smooths out a lot and u can barely hear it we tore the clutch apart and cannot find anything that is broke or not right

If it is a knocking noise, take the flywheel cover over off and verify the flywheel isn't loose on the splines. A loose flywheel seems to make noise on the clutch side, for whatever reason.

As mentioned by other posters, make sure the roller bearing in the pulley is in good shape as well.

Did you remove the clutch driving disc?
That would tell us two things... the
driving disc fits on tapered splines on
the crankshaft & if they are in good
condition it takes a serious puller to
remove it. Once it's removed one more
clutch plate is revealed.

If the splines are worn/loose that can be
a source of noise, and if the ''hidden'
fiber clutch disc is worn/broken/damaged
it can flop around and grab & make noise.
Also, excessive crankshaft endplay can
cause problems and noise.

It is set by moving the flywheel inwards
to limit endplay to ''spec'' then
tightening the flywheel clamping bolts.
IIRC, endplay ''spec'' is minimal, five
to ten thousandths, but verify this.
