Well.... Finally hit 100 degrees so I gave up in the garden and got in the shop with a big fan blowing. Filed points, nope. Swap condenser nope, nothing, not even weak spark, took it all back apart, oops didn't get both wires hooked to condenser! Dang it. Back together. Verify hot spark on all plugs.Try to start. Carb pouring gas, flooding all over. Pull it. Clean it, back on. No go. Wife looks and says you put carb gasket on upside down..... OMG. Gasket was blocking a hole and sticking out on side. Fixed that. Still no go. Wouldn't even start pulling it around. Why oh why?? Now the odd part. When we got it it wouldn't start. Swapped plug wires 180 ,fired up first pull. Been running like that. Today wife says swap plug wires 180 again..... Fired up on first pull..... Can't for the life of me figure out why. Never took mag that far apart, never had more than one plug wire off at a time. Cap has a little notch, only goes one way????

Yup, sometimes it goes like that, I mowed with my Super A mag 180 out for 2 or 3 years, until last spring it would not start, found it, changed it, running fine since, (knocking on wood), only problem I had with the tractor while running 180 out was it would diesel when shutting it off.

Very simple if you took the mag off the tractor you had a 50/50 chance to get it back on the same way it came off or 180 out is what it sounds like you did got it on 180 out

as it appeared to be your fix when it would not run, perhaps previous owner had it off and reinstalled it 180 out.....

grandpa, i think you have an infestation of barn gnomes. they come out at night and monkey with all your machinery. i caught a picture of one on my game camera

Adrian, I know it is your story and you can stick to it, but I am here to tell you what causes a gas engine to diesel has ZERO.. I mean ZERO to do with the ignition. The only very minor part it may play in it is if you have the timing off so far or something like this that would cause the actual engine temperature to get much higher than normal. This is because when you turn the ignition off the spark STOPS, end of story! NO more effects from spark in the cylinders. The number one cause of dieseling is the idle is set to high so the throttle plate is not closed enough. So namely to much AIR which is mixed with fuel is being let in the intake manifold. This is usually compounded by carbon deposits built up in the cylinders. They get red hot while the engine is running and then when you shut off the spark the hot carbon continues to light off the air/fuel mix in the cylinders. Unless you have a super duper hop up job on your Super A if the idle is set slow enough it should have very little tendency to diesel due to the compression is not that high. Now the higher compression 264 and 301 six cylinders had this inherent problem. For this reason IH equipped them with solenoids that closed the main fuel circuit of the carb when the ignition was shut off.

NO malice or forethought intended, but....I often refer to these events as harassment of the elderly. lol

Sounds like either gremlins or snow snakes are messing with your stuff when you are not looking.

Fought one for two weeks , change the distributor cap ,fired up . Center contact
I got make a list to trouble shoot magneto
Oh I had a rotor that the location key was damaged, it would go on any position , that was on the same tractor so . That was a nightmare,
Made me cry when I found it . And then cry again when it didnt start .
Think it was what damaged the cap . Not sure .
Yep got t make a list on tractors I keep with serial number of the magneto so I can remember the issues and what was done to fix them . Cause they all have there little stories.
