OT RV horizontal permanent mount propane tank?

So 1998 class C motorhome and the propane tank has developed a rust through pinhole... why are these things $1000.00 and is there any reason I couldnt mount twin 20lb tanks out back like a travel trailer?

YES the standard 20# tanks (or 30) mounted upright in a SAFE location can WORK,,,,,,Sometimes people
tie the two with an auto changeover valve so if one gets empty the other takes over.........I dont know the
rules codes and legality of when and where a DOT horizontal tank is used versus the 20# or 30# verticals,
maybe some fine gent will take the time to look that up for you ???? FWIW I've owned dozens of Motorhomes
over a 50 year span and they ALL had enclosed horizontal tanks while travel trailers, fifth wheels and truck
campers had the vertical THERE MAY BE A REASON FOR THAT ?????????? Have to Google it.... Any LP service
techs here ??????????

Hey there Billy, Im glad I never changed any of mine, like I said ALL Motorhomes I owned had horizontal LP Tanks....Seems like those are DOT and the others ASME ??? I forget... Usually someone will Google it and get him the answer, Im late for something lol

(quoted from post at 20:19:58 06/23/22) I hope you have a good lawyer. What you are doing is. Called change
of design. And makes your RV illegal.
That simply isnt true at all. As long as the tanks are mounted properly and outside the living area theres no issue at all.

Don't know where you are located but have you tried Colaw RV, 10389 Cimarron Rd, Carthage, MO 64836? (877) 548-2125

Web site is https://colawrv.com/

They have a big salvage yard. Might even have the model you have.

Hmm. It's a quarter-century old and the LPG tank is rusting out. How many other components have reached their end-of-life? If you don't think it's worth spending a thousand bucks on a propane tank, do you want to spend two grand on tires or 800 bucks on an air conditioner?

EIther it's worth spending the $1000 on to fix it right, or it's time to send it to the scrapyard. Or maybe you can find a decent used tank out of a wrecked RV.

Hi again gears, Ive owned RV's for 50 years and a past dealer and for sure have seen and heard of tanks
going bad grrrrrrrr but again in all the Motorhomes Ive ONLY seen Horizontal tanks: YOUR money YOUR RV
YOUR choice.

I have seen good Horizontal tanks at RV salvage yards before but I forget which ones other than they,
were in Indiana. If you look around near Elkhart Indiana the RV capitol I bet you will find a good used
one at a fair price LESS THAN A THOUDSAND BUCKS

Here are a few NEW HORIZONTAL Propane tanks LESS THAN a thousand bucks:

Hope this helps, shop around and good luck I bet you will find a good new or used tank. Hey many (I dont
know about yours) RV's have low miles and low wear despite having some age on them due to such limited
use. As long as the rest of the RV is in good shape it may be a good investment and best for you in your
situation to replace that bad tank (still as affordable as possible)..LOOK AT WHAT A NEW ONE COSTS !!!!!

Best wishes, good luck, get her fixed at an affordable price, back on the road and again like me a HAPPY
CAMPER

Roger..whowwww. You bring up a marvelous point that got my attention. Cant put in the front in case the driver rear ended another vehicle with your motor home. Ka-Plu-Weeeee! Rig up in the rear of the motor home and get rear ended. Ka-Plu-Weeeeeee! Wingnut
