steering drifting?

I have a IH 856 and when I'm cutting hay the tractor is always drifting to the right, I'm constantly turning the steering wheel to the left to keep it going straight, what could be causing this?

thanks,

it appears there is a problem in the hydraulic steering system, maybe o rings bypassing, while the wheel is held striaght. i was not into one but just suggesting a possibility.

Power. The hand pump is exactly that, an actual pump hooked to the steering wheel shaft. That pump sends its hydraulic pressure to a centering and directional valve, which uses system pressure to move the slave cylinder at the front axle. I have made it radically simple, but that centering valve is what keeps it going straight. Jim

My 2000 T5C terramite does that too. It came from a DIY rental place. The terramite was used, abused, left outside and neglected.
I'm not going to replace the power steering box.

I don't use this terramite that much anymore. Larry hasn't
picked it up..lol

You may play with tire pressure, the toe in, toe out, the tie rod adjustment.

If by saying you are constantly turning the wheel to the left you mean you are never turning it to the right, then the previous replies are appropriate. If you are correcting both directions as you are traveling and the wheel ends up farther to one side over time, then that is because the cylinder doing the turning uses more oil to turn while extending the cylinder than it does while retracting. That causes the wheel to need to be turned more to bring it back to the original direction. I realize this is probably as clear as mud. Paul

Does it only do this when cutting? If only when cutting then what is different?? Also what kind of mower are you using? also a Ford guy, joe

You have one of 2 problems for your steering it is either the hand pump or the pilot valve. Though I believe it is more the hand pump. Reason for this thinking is I changed my 806 over to 56 series style shifting mechanism. They sent me the whole casting upright with hand pump on it. I just used the whole outfit and mine does the same thing on my 806 now. My 856 steers like a dream with the pilot valve leaking like a stuck steer right now. I will fix it in the next couple of weeks as things slow down a bit. Will just get first cutting squared away and will need to cut wheat. After that I can start the fixing routine.

With hydrostatic steering there's no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steering parts up front and a certain amount of drift is normal/acceptable, according to the shop manual & it's typically more than you might expect. I suggest consulting the appropriate factory shop manual before ASSUMING what you've got going on is ''out of spec.''.
