Finding tdc on a 2640 deere

Looks like my injector pump does need to be rebuilt, so Im going to pull it and send it off.

I understand the engine needs to be at top dead center with timing marks and the window on the injector pump lined up.

I have done timing belts and chains on lots of gas vehicles, but diesels are a whole new experience for me.

I normally use a socket and breaker bar on the crank to turn an engine over (with spark plugs out to make it easier to turn!). Is this the same basic principle here? Where exactly is the crank bolt on this thing, and do I go clockwise? Lastly, where are the timing marks?

Anyone here have a FSM in PDF format? Im an admin on a Honda ATV board and we have a lot of digital factory service manuals in a sort of library for folks to use. Would be nice if there was a similar John Deere library

Thanks for any guidance anyone can offer.

first thing is there is no reason to find any marks just to remove the pump for repair. it can be done after the pump is gone out for repair.
turn the engine in normal rotation by the front crank and if possible by the ring gear or however. you need it on TDC on compression. and
without the pump on can be more difficult to know the compression stroke. but your valves should be set anyhow so once the valve cover is off
that makes it easy. if the valve rockers are loose on tdc for #1 then its compression, and its running mate #6 valves will be tight. if the
pump is on the tractor, pump marks would be lined up when at TDC on compression. only reason i can see to worry about finding TDC on
compression for #1. plus i dont know if it has glow plugs but that is another way to find compression stroke. timing marks are on front
pully or flywheel as i said not sure on them. just takes a look and see. you need a service manual, it will have the info.

Turn engine until the PUMP marks align under the two screw side cover. Engine SHOULD be close to TDC then on JD applications. Pump turns at 1/2 engine speed, just
because flywheel TDC is aligned pump marks may or may not be aligned.

Some JD engines can be turned at the flywheel after removing a cover and using the ring gear teeth, turn the cover stud/bolt around and install it in the threaded
hole. The stud end will drop in a spot drilled flywheel hole for TDC. Set the pump timing BEFORE removing pump, DO NOT turn engine with pump removed. The pump holds
the drive shaft centered, and gear/shaft MIGHT jump time if engine is turned without pump in place.

"Would be nice if there was a similar John Deere library"

That doesn't always work out because DEERE guards their intellectual property like an angry mama pitbull that thinks you are hurting her pups.

I'm surprised if Honda doesn't do the same?

You can find the manuals, and purchase them, for your tractor at the John Deere Technical Information Store. Here is a link to it: John Deere AG (and turf) Bookstore . Click on Equipment Publications. On that page enter 2640 in the box beside the Model search box and search. You will see there are two serial number ranges for the 2640 manuals, so you need your serial number to get the right one for your tractor. The Technical Manuals are purchase items. The Operator's Manuals are free to download. The parts catalogs (purchase) are there as well or you can use the on line ones found at https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/ .

Your tractor has a crank driven hydraulic pump. doesn't it? That drive covers the "crank bolt" just as it would with any engine having a bolt or nut holding the dampener pulley on a crank.

The engine should turn counter clockwise when viewed from the operator's seat. Bump the starter and watch the fan to confirm.

jeepwm69, go to the john deere store, buy the service manual, then scan it and upload to the www. I'm pretty sure that the sm is
copyrighted material, but what the hey. John Deere lawyers need some one to sue. After losing to Kinze twice and Scranton Mfg
they are looking for a win.. Besides how you gonna swipe the screen when your hands are all greasy. lol gobble

Well, if you went to all the trouble to write a book and publish it, would you want someone buying a copy of it, scanning it, and posting it online for free for everyone to see?

Service manuals are just as much tools as the wrenches and screwdrivers on your bench.

I swear I will never understand why people quibble over a few bucks for the manuals after they've spent how many thousands on the tractor... When I buy a tractor the books are the first thing I order before anything else. Last time around it cost me $100 for a $9500 tractor which is now a $12500 tractor since I put tires on it.

True, I forgot how nuts JD has gotten about their intellectual property.

Probably why most of the farmers around here are switching brands.

I'll pick up a print copy of the FSM. With ATV's I work on them for family and friends, so having a digital file with a lot of different models really comes in handy when working on a particular model I might never have to work on again.

2630 and 2640 have a timing pin to put in the flywheel. Unbolt it from the timing window cover and turn it around and stick the long
end back in the hole. Slowly turn the flywheel until the pin drops in the indention in the flywheel. It will lock it in that position.
Take the window off the pump. The marks should line up. If it doesn't, pull the pin back, turn it another full turn and put the pin
back. The marks should be close to be aligned. Final adjustment is made by turning the pump

I suspect the reason some of the other brands are not as picky about their copyrights is because those companies are no longer around to enforce their copyrights.

(quoted from post at 11:40:09 06/23/22) 2630 and 2640 have a timing pin to put in the flywheel. Unbolt it from the timing window cover and turn it around and stick the long

IIRC timing pin can be inserted in depression in flywheel with inj pump shaft 180 out of correct location.

If timing marks line up in inj pump when pin is in depression then timing should be correct

I sent it to a member here. Dieseltech.

10 days back to me including shipping both ways, and price was much better than I had quoted locally.

Working on installing it now.
