Stick (Inconel) or braze stainless to cast exhaust

Put a new manifold on my IH460U and the original 90 degree cast pieces no longer fits the new unit. I bought an adapter that is cast but will need to cut it down to use the flange and plan on build the 90 out of some stainless I already have.

I have some Inconel rod which would be suitable or I could braze it. Not sure which would hold up better.

Unrelated I have a dodge that has a second exhaust port brazed (I believe) on and it has not had an issue with thousands of miles and many heat cycles.

Just above the fiberglass cloth is the original 90 turn down thats being replaced. I'm only using the flange of the replacement offset outlet.

It's hard to say. The casting alloy is a mystery. Brazing would probably work, but once brazed that's it. I would use 309L first, If that doesn't work, Plan B. I haven't always had luck with Inconel.

i would not braze it. ever see a red hot manifold? the brazing will melt. there is never brazing on manifolds. before proper welding rods for
the job,, exhaust pipes were gas welded with coat hangars, wire rod. there is the proper rod out there for the job.

Ive never seen brazing melt on a manifold, it melts at about 1600 f which is way over what you should have for sustained manifold temp.

Less likely to crack than welding too. That said, Ive not ever brazed cast, local guy always did brazing repairs but hes not doing much now.

Brazing does not work well on cast or materials that go through a lot of heating/cooling cycles. The brass will
harden from the heating and cooling, then get brittle, then crack. BTDT.

Silver solder may work if you cen get good adhesion, but proper welding with a nickel alloy welding rod would
probably be the stronest and longest lasting - as well as the most heating/cooling resistant.

Yep

Ni Rod as well as Inconel, Incoloy and others are tradenames.

There are many varieties of all those tradenames.

Inconel consumables are pretty much all only recommended for use on Inconel alloys.

Ni Rod consumables are more forgiving on what can be welded with them.
