Hope someone knew what they bought

Was at a consignment sale today in Iowa and they had a very sharp IH 766 black stripe narrow front tractor. It sold for $21,000. But if you really looked it over good it was not a black stripe tractor. When it was sold the seller nor auction company said anything about black stripe. I hope the buyer did a good inspection before hand. It was really hard to find the white paint but it was there. Narrow front 856 sold for around $9000, very nice 4430 powershift with cab $26,000, 520 Deere no power steering $2500 and a 1530 Deere with loader and 1800 original hours, super sharpe sold for $9500. It is kind of like a JD 4020D, goes rrrr rrrr and smokes. Hey and I think a 4020 is a pretty fine machine. One thing about them they had better brakes and final drives than an IH from that era, but getting OT. Just a different paint scheme on the IH.

I have a 966 Black stripe, if I remember correctly its a 1976 model, which was the last year that they built the 66 series before the design change and the 86 series began. Basically the same tractors with a few modest changes. Relocated the gear selector, totally new and improved cab, took the fuel tank off of the hood in front of the windshield and put it behind the cab. Thus allowing the cab to be moved forward, and they hung the doors backwards in the cab.

(quoted from post at 02:25:07 06/15/22) I have a 966 Black stripe, if I remember correctly its a 1976 model, which was the last year that they built the 66 series before the design change and the 86 series began. Just to be clear, you're describing an 86 series tractor.

The black stripe 66 series had the same shifter, same cab, same fuel tank location, as the rest of the 66 series. Same power as the 1973-later models when the engine's rated RPM was increased and they were re-geared slightly.

Black stripe 66's started in late 1975 and ran until the end of 66 series production in mid 1976. They are denoted by the black stripe along the side of the hood and turns upwards near the front, as opposed to the white stripe that runs into the lower "dogleg" panels on the earlier models.

The shifter and throttle handles will be black instead of chrome.

MOST black stipes will have some minor mechanical differences including 86 series cab mounts on the bell housing, serial number relocated to the lower right side of the transmission housing, solid one-piece drawbar, and 86 series 3pt links. Very early ones may or may not have all the features.

There is an IH serial number break for black stripes. For the 966 the first black stripe is 31263.

Agreed. A Black Stripe 66 series is mostly cosmetic changes and very few mechanical changes. To my uninformed eye it is virtually identical to the previous models. The shifter is in the same location as
earlier years and the fuel tank is still in front of the operator under the hood. If you have a 66 series with the shifter in a different location (beside the seat) and the fuel tank behind the cab someone
either made those changes or they took an 86 series and put 66 series decals on it.

The easiest check for the 966 is the serial number and see if its a 1976 model. The white paint could just be damaged sheet metal was replaced with sheet metal from an earlier tractor that was in better condition. We had a 1566 with the red cab and black stripe - it looked virtually identical to our 1973 1466 except it had a white cab and white strip and white dog legs.

hydraulic levers are handier. Easier to
split twice when replacing the pto brake.
No hump in the floor on the PS. just few
things

Your subject line brought back an amusing local story about a fellow who had never been on a farm but, nevertheless, purchased a small sandy farm. He decided to have some poultry and a few hogs to get started and planted some field corn for them. So far, so good. He then decided to look around for a corn picker to harvest the corn. He spotted an auction notice where, among all the farm machinery listed, was a corn picker. He went to the auction and submitted a winning bid and went home with the machine. When he got it home he started looking it over and, for the life of him, could not figure out how it worked. He called one of his neighbors, a lifelong farmer, and asked him if he could come over and explain how this corn picker worked. Neighbor arrived and took one look at the machine and started to laugh. Turned out the guy had purchased a corn chopper, not a picker. A good laugh was had and the guy then proceeded to trade his chopper for a picker. Actually, it all worked out quite well.
