Oil for diesel engines?

Are there different kinds of oil for Diesel engines? Are there current different classifications for oil for diesel?

I have an International 986 and a John Deere 925 front end mower, a bigger commercial lawn mower, both with diesel engines. Do these both take the same oil for diesel engines? Do I need to look for a specific API spec for oil for my tractor? For my mower?

The manual for the John Deere F925 calls for API CE or CD oil, which is an old spec by now. What's the equivalent (better) modern oil spec? Or is it all the same?

A local big box store has Mobil Delvac HDEO 15W-40 for Diesel engines, says it's for heavy duty Diesel engines, meets API CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, for $10 for a gallon. Would this work for either or both of my diesels?

Thank you!

Yes it will work.

It is safe to go higher up the alphabet from the spec, but never lower.

You can't even buy the CD or CE anymore that I know of, obsolete.

Oil specifications have always been "backwards compatible" so any specification that is alphabetically or numerically "higher" than what's required, will work.

Otherwise you'd have to have a store the size of a WalMart just with oil.

I have several diesels from my F935 mower to my Duramax truck or my tractors. (At least 14 engines) I had been running Shell Rotella T6 in all until it
disappeared off the shelves. I switched over to Mobil Delvac 1 ESP full synthetic oil. Oil pressure and engine temperature still runs the same as with Shell and
have not seen any issues, except my wallet has more padding verses the Shell brand. That is a good price.

Speaking of which, my local bulk dealer here in Canada won't even sell me a case of Delvac. Says even long-time customers have to beg for oil there's such an supply shortage. Says if you want oils or lubes, buy now.

The local Atwoods farm store has pallets of 2.5 gallon CK-4 15w-40 for $30. That's $3 a quart....that's a mighty fine price if you ask
me. They also have pallets of THD oil, both pre 1988 equipment and post....J20c rated. Every place else I shop had empty shelves
of HD diesel oil.

To the best of my knowledge, all the newer API classifications are backward compatible so you can use the newer API
classifications in the older engines.

(quoted from post at 07:31:44 06/13/22) Speaking of which, my local bulk dealer here in Canada won't even sell me a case of Delvac. Says even long-time customers have to beg for oil there's such an supply shortage. Says if you want oils or lubes, buy now.

That attitude just exacerbates the "supply shortage." Only buy what you need when you need it. This will give suppliers a chance to catch up.

Struck me as kind odd too. Wonder if it's real or imagined or BS. He wasn't even stocking Univis Extra but was readily available from main depot.

Careful of the post 2007 diesel emissions oils . The additive package was reduced to limit plugging the particulate filter with ash.
Diesels with a low ash additive package tend to use roller cam followers because solid lifters will contact the cam and wear.
Also why the two stroke diesel used a SF-2 ow ash straight weight and roller cam followers to prevent stuck rings and plugged ports.

Walmart by me had Delvac 1300 for 13$ a gallon, or 30$ for 2.5 gallon. They had hardly any left, and next time I went were all out.

TSC was wiped out of all the cheaper oil. Only synthetic diesel oil left. The two stores closest to me were the same. Also they were out of Travellers UTF.
I dont know if its because of a shortage, or because everyone is using their tractor this time of the year.

Anyways I normally run Rotella T4 in not only my Diesel engines, but also my small gas engines. This time I got some Delvac because of the sale.

I think the diesel oils still have more zinc in them than the gas engine oils.

The reason for the diesel oil is diesel is dirty and they put a different detergent in it which is better to clean diesel engines. Having
said that though I bought a Kubota tractor new and nobody said anything about special oil so I used conventional oil in it for about 30 years
and it doesn't seem to have hurt it. I did do regular oil changes. It has diesel oil in it now.

Thanks for all your responses. I bought 5 gallons today, it's actually $11 per gallon.

I also discovered that Napa has a sale this month on the Mobil Delvac 1300 oil for diesel for $16 a gallon

It's a Walmart in Kansas City that has the Mobil Delvac oil. I discovered that Walmart has the best price for a gallon on oil a few years ago, when I found Quaker State 0W-20 for $21, which I use for my car.

They didn't seem to have any oil for diesel on the shelf, then I ran across this display. I don't know if other Walmarts sell it, or if they were trying to get rid of it, stop selling it.
