Comparing tractors

First of all I really enjoy operating both these machines.Thought it would be fun to do a seat of the pants comparison.Going to use my 1983 White 2-88 and my 1975 Deere 4230 as examples. Both tractors are normally aspirated,Deere has a 404 vs 354 cubes for the White.Within 13 hp of each other at the pto,Deere 100 hp vs the White at 87 hp.They both start easy and run very good and do not use any oil. Both tractors have closed center hydraulics,White flows 20 gpm vs the Deere at 23 gpm.The White is around 3,000 lbs. heavier overall. The White has 400 lbs on front axle vs the Deere with 600 lbs.Tire size/condition the same. Both tractors have done the same jobs with the same equipment.Personal observation:The Deere handles better with lighter, easier steering. The White cab is roomier, quieter and easier to get in and out of and visibility is better..alot better.A/C better in the White as well but it has a bigger condenser so probably not a fair comparison.Yes both A/C systems are well maintained.Hydraulic performance about a tie but flow control adjustment more convenient on the Deere but draft control actually works on the White. The White uses far less fuel than the Deere doing the same jobs but also is about 50 cubes smaller. But I think the Dot 4 perkins in the White is just plain more efficient also feels every bit as strong as the Deere if not more so power wise.Well that's my personal observation your results may vary.

Oh yea Deere was also dualled up pulling the disk.

Does the White have Diff Lock, and a foot throttle? Also, do the remotes have a float position? Our 1975 2-105 did not have those features. But it still was a great tractor!

See lots of 30 - 40 series deeres still in use here as haying, loader, utility tractors, etc. Whites; none. Neighbor found a White a few years ago to replace his 4020. It lasted less than 2 years and is now parked in a hedge row. Never had any experience with a white, but put lots of hours on a couple of MM model U's for a neighbor back in the 60's. They were reliable ole work horses.

At $6/gallon for fuel the White would be my favorite. Hard to beat those whites for reliability and fuel economy.

Only White I want is a late 2-180. 30 series JD arent really my favorite either. I prefer the visibility of the JD. You have one post in the middle vs a muffler in the middle and the two window seams on the whites.

No diff lock or float on the White but it does have a foot throttle. The Deere has diff lock and float.Plus the Deere has a better clutch and brakes.I had a 1983 Deere 4250 with a 15 speed powershift for a while and it was the best tractor I have had so far, only downside is it used a lot of fuel.

Agree with the 4250 comments. Always wanted one. Kinda the last of that new generation Deere. There was one at a local sale. 15 speed. 3 remotes. Nice. Went for about double what I wanted to pay. I must not be the only one that likes that model!

Were not any established White dealers around against a lot of Deere dealers. That I think is why not many White and a lot of Deeres. The Oliver dealers were out of bussiness before the White came about. Same thing for Moline and more Oliver dealers than Moline. So who could you go to to buy a tractor, Something you would have liked but not avaible or something you were not fond of but readiable avaible?
