I closely followed ACG's posts here. Loved his creativity to manufacture a device/tool to help him get the work done. His wood getting tractors, trailers, splitter and elevator. While it is true, you can't take it with you, you can leave the creative, I can make that, I can do that attitude with a world full of followers. It is my hope that the sale can bring joy to his family as his creations and treasures are passed on to other collectors and doers. gobble
 
One thing he did is drag logs to collection sites then cut them into blocks. What I wondered was what about the dirt the dragged logs pick up. Not good for chainsaw chains. Did anyone else wonder about that? Seems like rather than drag them he'd have made and used a log arch trailer.
 
I agree with you about dirt and mud being rough on saw chain. I often dragged logs when cutting firewood. If the ground was frozen or with a little snow cover it wasn't too much of a problem . If I did get one muddy I always brought an axe and a small hatchet and used them to knock off the bark (and dirt) where I wanted to make my cuts.
 
Its a little late to ask now, but he had the firewood production and storage down pat. I'm sure he did not cut thru dirty muddy bark. It just doesn't fit with the rest of his character. imho gobble
 
He normally only moved the logs for firewood when the ground was frozen. If the bark was really dirty then a hand ax trimmed most it off before he cut them up.He really had it down pat.
